A great premise! When rudy gets out of iron mountain prison on parole, he looks up someone else's girlfriend (charlize theron, a couple years before monster!) he gets beat up by the girl's brother (gary sinise). And gets caught up in a dangerous scheme to rob a casino. Lots of suspense and action. But it's always a little bit tongue in cheek. You'll recognize dennis farina as the casino manager. He was also the copper chasing whoopie in burglar! And danny trejo, who always plays the bad guy. It's pretty good with some surprises. And some female nudity. A little un-even now and then. Even after they decide rudy is who he says he is, they still chain him to the hotel room. And his method for breaking into the hotel room was a little over the top. It's fun, but it's not the serious heist drama that they were probably hoping for. Directed by john frankenheimer. He had also done seconds and manchurian candidate (the 1962 one!). Story by ehren kruger. He was nominated for maverick.
How have i never seen this one?? It's one of the hepburn/tracy films they made together. Lutie (hepburn) moves out west to marry jim brewton (tracy). At first glance, he seems to be greedy and rude. He seems to love his land more than anything else. And she appears to have more in common with neighbor brice chamberlain. There's a spark there between them, and they both know it. Some familiar co-stars! Melvyn douglas, ed buchanan, robert walker. Harry carey would pass away the same year this came out. It's pretty good! Also very long! A typical western, starring the couple of the decade! But don't look for comedy in this one. Although it's sort of "woman of the year" in reverse! In this one, the husband has the one track mind. And it gets in the way of the marriage. Directed by elia kazan, one of his early works. Story by conrad richter; he had several novels made into film. It's good... just not as fun as some of their others. A rather adult subject matter in this one, considering the film code was technically still in effect.
Bruce dern, jack nicholson. Two brothers are hustlers, doing what they can to get by in atlantic city. They talk about running a hotel or casino, but can't seem to get the money together. They bring in a couple girls to hep them. Some great scenery of old time atlantic city ! Also scatman crothers, julia robinson, ellen burstyn. It's pretty good. Another serious drama that ends on a dark note. Directed by bob rafelson. He was twice nominated for easy pieces, and produced on some biggies. Sadly, robinson died young at twenty four, a couple years after this came out.
