Red, White & Royal Blue (2023)
A little disappointing when compared to the book
As is often the case with a movie based on a book, especially if one loves the book, has read it multiple times and knows all the characters, their quircks and many layers, a movie simply cannot live up to the story in my head. This one is no different. It's entertaining, endearing and witty, and I can see they tried, but it's just not good enough to do the book justice.
Right after, I lowered my expectations and watched it again (it just came out and I haven't had any sleep yet). It was a little better. Problem is, with the character switches, merges, drops and additions, you lose two separate side plots entirely, which makes the movie feel one-dimensional (the villain character felt too random. Probably because he was, because he wasn't in the book!)
I have a few good points too: the characters Zahra and Amy were cast so good (but again, Amy had a very interesting backstory)- you know what, just read the book. If you want to read funny dialogue, a romantic love story, and explore some serious character development, Read. The. Book. Okay I'm done.
Project Power (2020)
I actually liked it!
Maybe I'm the odd one out but I genuinely like movies like this. I wasn't expecting to be blown away by this and of course you can tell from the beginning exactly how it will end, but I don't mind that. In fact, I found it highly entertaining! The actors look like they're having a good time making it. Is it a cinematographic masterpiece? No. Is it something fun to watch while you're chilling on the couch? Absolutely.
Monos (2019)
Could not enjoy - nothing really happened
Saw this at a Sneak Preview in my city. I'm usually very openminded when it comes to cinema and I can enjoy and appreciate almost everything. Monos rubbed me the wrong way. The audience was left puzzled as to what the message (morale) of the story was and overall the constant beeping made it really difficult for me to enjoy the film. Cinematography: stunning. But this was not the movie for me.
Snowpiercer (2013)
All aboard the crazy train
First, I have to say that it's been a while (about seven months) since I've seen this film. The reason I decided to write a review anyway, is because this movie sticks in my mind like I'd imagine a protein jelly block would stick between your teeth.
Snowpiercer was part of a Sneak Preview program so I had no idea what to expect. Look, there's a train. There's people in it. It almost looks like a society. Wait a minute... it IS a society! As the movie went on the only coherent thought in my head was 'holy sh*t'.
By the time I'm writing this there are 353 reviews for this film already. About the content, style and acting performances, there's not much left to say. The only thing I can do is HIGHLY RECOMMEND you see this. I mean it. Snowpiercer blew me away and left me speechless when the movie was over. It took me weeks to process it all, and after about two months I finally got some of the more underlying metaphors. This just seems to stick with me. I still think about it every now and then. I haven't seen it since, and I haven't seen it come out anywhere in theaters in my country, but if you can get your hands on this movie, I suggest you go see it. Just buckle up and enjoy the ride.
Abduction (2011)
I kept waiting for the werewolf to come out...
I had some issues with Taylor Lautner's acting here in Abduction. The movie itself was okay, but I just kept waiting for the werewolf to pop out at some point. His acting was quite good, but it's the danger with casting actors who are famous for iconic roles (just like we can't ever see Daniel Radcliffe NOT being Harry Potter, or see Robert Pattinson as something other than a vampire, or see Sarah Michelle Gellar not being Buffy, and so on and so forth). Especially with Taylor looking so much like the Jacob he plays in the Twilight Saga.
About Abduction: I liked the storyline. Made me wonder what I'd think if I would ever find myself on a missing children's website. But come on, he didn't look anything like his 'parents'. Some bells must've been going off in his head! That being said, I rate Abduction a 5 out of 10. It was entertaining, but it would be more believable with someone else in the lead role. Go ahead, see for yourself!
Cake (2005)
Something you've seen before, probably in a better version.
I can't help but wonder why a fairly good actor has to be in such an awful film. Maybe the producers thought that it would lift the movie to a higher level or something. In my opinion, Taye Diggs is brought down a level or two.
I've seen him in much better movies (like Equilibrium, for example - he was GOOD in that one. Really). Heather Graham, on the other hand, I really haven't. Know what to expect - pretty darling Heather in sexy outfits parading across the screen while there is no sign of any talent. Ever. I won't even bother discussing the storyline, it's something you've seen before, only probably better. Notting Hill, Bridget Jones' Diary, need I say more?
I found this film in a 40-DVD-box together with many other low-rated movies, but it was cheap, so I don't really care.
I rate this film a 2 out of 10, because it's nice to watch if you are completely bored out of your mind and have absolutely nothing else to do. But then again, for such occasions there are still better movies to watch.
