Fashion Chicks

Fashion Chicks

  • Predictable, irritating and stereotypical

It's all been done before - nerdy girl wants to become popular, popular girl is vacuous and vicious.

You can guess the rest, as Fashion Chicks is staggeringly predictable and full of lazy outdated stereotypes.

Perhaps what is worst is that the lead character, Nel, is so irritating - just as you think she's about to achieve triumphal revenge she reverts to being absurdly craven and weak.

I almost preferred her nemesis, Tiffany - at least her behaviour was consistent.

It appears that some people enjoyed this movie, so there's no accounting for taste, but if you want to see a great teen flick with some similar themes and done a million times better, watch Clueless instead.

  • Oh my Geoff and my Vicki long ago

All the Stations is a YouTube documentary series which follows Geoff Marshall and Vicki Pipe as they go to all the railway stations in Great Britain over the spring and summer of 2017.

It also resulted in a sequel in 2019 as the couple travelled to all the stations in Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic.

The episodes have a somewhat compelling element as one is drawn into the pair's quest and you feel as if you get to know them as people and are along for the ride.

If there is a quibble it is that some of the episodes become a bit samey, especially when ticking off the suburban lines around the major cities. But I guess that in reality it was a bit samey. It's not supposed to be "All the nice bits".

The best parts are the rural lines and the quest to visit obscure stations with very infrequent services, as little as once a week in some cases.

A poignant aspect is that I believe that Geoff and Vicki are no longer together, so it really does capture a moment in time. It also captures the railways as they were in 2017, which will become more captivating with the passage of time.

If you don't want to go the whole hog with all the episodes, there is also a feature-length documentary.

  • Predictable but okay romatic drama-comedy

Mai scherzare con le stelle ticks all the boxes for its genre.

Ines is involved in an ongoing feud with her downstairs neighbour, Alfredo. For reasons that will be revealed when you watch the film, she unexpectedly has to turn to him for help.

You can no doubt guess the outcome.

It is, however, quite a solid story, though many of the scenes are incredibly contrived. There is, of course, a love rival for Alfredo's attention, Erika, and here is one of the film's issues. She doesn't appear to have a bad bone in her body. And one is left lamenting as to why she has to get dealt such a rotten hand.

If you come across this made for TV film, probably on Netflix, overall it's not a bad way to spend 100 minutes, but I just couldn't quite bring myself to give it a 6, it's a 5.5 out of 10.
