American history is complicated. It's stories can make an American citizen proud to discuss or ashamed to whisper. This documentary "Redeeming Uncle Tom: The Josiah Henson Story" to me is a mixture of both. It shows the evils that men do and at the same time the courage of and decency of people. The bitterness and evil of American slavery is described fully. The awakening and then courage of this American slave to find freedom from slavery is uplifting. The kindness and generosity of some Americans both Indian and white is heart warming. SOME people want to hide historical stories like this and whitewash the facts. That is why I say this documentary is 'Must See TV'. Because, after watching it, you the viewer will never forget it.
That the filmmakers decided to make a film about this hospital is admirable. However, they should have spent less time discussing individual doctors and nurses and more time about the hospital and its effect on St. Louis politics, medical care, racism and the community.
