I am a huge fan of Star Trek, but (like The Orville) the episodes have now started to become out of my spectrum of good Sci-Fi stories too often. Some episodes are still great, but others don't keep my interest and have become silly instead of seriously engaging. I'm glad there's not a laugh track. But maybe it is just me and the stories need to take these weird diversions due to the evolution of the show.
First, not much happened in this episode. It was pretty slow. But both my wife and I had trouble understanding the dialog and I had to turn on subtitles! Never had to do that before. While the actors did a nice job with what they had, the focus on Jamie's parents was far from interesting IMO. And trying to make the dialog more word choice authentic and unintelligible as a result was fully the fault of the writing.
After the first few episodes I rated Severance a 6 on acting excellence. I've since watched every episode because even a 6 is worth watching and brings me back. But I never felt the chemistry between the characters, so I really don't care what happens to them, and that's the writing failure. And the story is pretty weak so I've not felt really drawn to the big mystery of what they were doing or why. Yes, there are lots of visual tidbits I've learned watching YouTube that help the understanding of the story, but that's just mostly fun stuff for the dedicated fans. I'll keep watching, but if it ended now I wouldn't miss it. Nice concept falls short.
