I think being a fan of the original movie "Infernal Affairs" ruined this one for me. The original is almost perfect that I feel there's something lacking for this one. DiCaprio and Damon doesn't seem to quite fit the characters they're playing. The suspense and nervousness I felt every time I watched the original movie, I do not feel it here. There's a lack of sympathy or empathy for the good guys. I've watched Scorsese's films before and I loved them. But this one was not up to par in my opinion. I was actually excited to see what he's going to do with the adaptation of one of my favorite movies but it feel like he made a tamed down version of it. It's like, he has a check list and made sure all the important parts of the original is in the new adaptation. But those who will watch it for the first time may think this is a great movie because it has a strong plot and storyline and Scorsese did a great job adapting this from a HK environment to a Boston environment.
This movie is about test pilots, their dedication and their sacrifices to protect the country they love. If you call this propaganda, then isn't all military propaganda? Put politics and prejudices aside and watch the movie for what it is. It's a story about the journey of a young pilot, Lei Yu, to becoming a great test pilot. The director is one of the best I see in filming jet planes. I've never see jet planes so beautifully filmed before. The movie also went under heavy scrutiny to make sure all the facts are right. It is action packed right from the start and it has moments that makes you laugh and moments that makes you cry. The CGI is done perfectly and the surround sound of the roar of the plane engine ripping through the sky gets you all fired up. It has shots of gorgeous landscapes and clouds that makes you wish you were a pilot! The acting by the entire cast is excellent and natural. Wang Yibo's acting amazes each time as you go through every emotion he goes through. I do love that Lei Yu has flaws and makes mistakes, unlike other movies where hero is always the best. One thing I would love is to see more interaction with more of his teammates and get to know them better. They look like a fun group. I also love how the director deals with romance in this movie. Although it was barely there, one glance is more than enough to let the imagination fly! Overall, it's a great movie that the whole family can enjoy. It has just the right amount of everything. I'm ready for a rewatch! It's very unfortunate they don't show it in IMAX here.
I stopped watching movies for a while because I feel they don't make them like they used to. I was so happy that Hidden Blade has brought back what movies should be: Beautiful cinematography, colors, lighting, and score that builds up each scene. This is definitely not like your typical popcorn movie. It makes you think, it makes you wonder, it makes you guess. Cheng Er did a great job in drawing in the attention of the audience by his non lineal presentation of the storyline but doesn't make it too hard to put the pieces of the puzzle together by the end. When you finally figured out what's going on, it is quite satisfying. What amazes me the most for this movie is the acting. Tony Leung is a legend and rightfully so. Zhou Xun's scenes were short but she doesn't waste a single second. Wang Yibo is fairly new and young, yet with his caliber of acting which stood up to Tony and other seasoned actors, he really is the biggest black horse. He makes you hate, love, empathize with his character. Also, this can't be a proper review without mentioning the fight scene! I was at the edge of my seat! Overall I really enjoyed this movie a lot. I never have the urge to go back to the theaters to rewatch a movie more than once. This is the only movie gave me the urge to. I highly recommend it.
