Confusing and frequently slow made watching the series difficult to finish. 8 episodes took me maybe 12-15 different viewing times due to the pacing.
AFAIK, it was originally a manga series with an anime version and now this. Don't know anything about Japanese manga, anime, etc, but this series appears to be close translation of a successful comic book source with JV screenwriters without any military consultants, a decent budget, making visuals a priority over substance, character interaction, and logical plot development.
Who would really enjoy this movie? Maybe 10-12 year old boys if they skip most of the political stuff. Americans were obviously not the target audience given the preponderance of stupid and simple Americans.
5 stars for some interesting story ideas, special effects, and many nice visuals. If you demand realism, skip this movie.

I watched this movie knowing nothing about it at all.
Boring even for a spectacular SFX driven crazy end of the world movie.
There are so many useless characters you would hope would die.
Wasted talent...it looked like Halle Berry and couldn't believe it was her just cashing in a paycheck.
Once it it got to the "surprise", I laughed out loud but kept me awake.
Emmerich should never attempt at character development as he did here abysmally for an insanely long 2hr 10min.
He should do what he does best -- popcorn SFX driven summer action escapist movie fare.
Could have been rated much higher if Emmerich had cut out many of the characters, really long backstory, kept the "surprise" explanation straight forward, and focused on pure entertainment value through SFX, crazy story arc, unbelievable action, shallow but entertaining characters requiring little thought.
I enjoyed many of his previous movies for just the light entertainment value but Moonfall fails as a "bigger and better" Emmerich movie.
I can only recommend this movie for those who love to SFX / crazy sci-fi movies / movie nerds who love dissecting bombs, but for all others, skip.
