This series deserves credit for its ambition and good intentions but that isn't enough to create a good drama. I'm sure this sounded like a ground breaking television event when the idea was first pitched but after watching the first episode I think the reality is rather different. They wanted to create something that was hard to watch and have succeeded rather too well, I found it almost impossible to watch at times. As a non-deaf person I found it distracting having to read sub-titles for the signing, this made it difficult to engage with the deaf characters and I presume engaging with the deaf characters is the whole point of the series! Perhaps they are trying to do the impossible.
I've only watched the first episode so far and will probably continue watching more in hope than expectation of some clever plot twists to come. My hope is that the family scenes that mimic the Godfather are designed to mislead us and at the end we will say 'Great plot twist, yes of course that's what happened, t explains why...'. And something did, or rather didn't happen in ep1 that will either be explained or maybe we just accept the plotting isn't great.
The big question of course is: will Sean Bean survive? When he played Sharpe at the start of his career he was ridiculously invulnerable, since then he has died in a variety of ways!
