Finding a good original film made in Russia is a difficult task. Usually, this is not an interesting copy of Western ideas or another stupid comedy with comedy stars in the lead roles.
The Malenkiy voin is a good example, where the usual idea of fathers and sons is framed in an original and slightly exotic sumo wrestling wrapper.
Sumo in Russia is far from being a popular type of martial arts, especially among teenagers, for whom this is another reason to laugh at clumsy peers. And it is all the more interesting to watch how the main character, despite the ridicule of his classmates, learns to overcome difficulties with the help of the philosophy of Japanese wrestling.
The acting adds marvelous harmony and turns the film into a cozy family-friendly comedy.
