The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives (2024)
Rated 1 Only Because 0 is Not a Choice
The show itself is a prime example of poor taste and even poorer skill in producing a television series. It is just another example of people with no good taste or values living low class, ignorant lives with petty jealousies and a complete lack of common decency. And it's boring. No redeeming value whatsoever.
I was afraid this is what it would be but I was curious and decided to check it out because I have had a Mormon family in my neighborhood for the last 15 years. I don't share their religious beliefs but I have found them to be good, decent people always seeming relatively cheerful and helping out in the neighborhood. That is not what this show portrays at all.
Poor Things (2023)
I Wanted to Like This - I Could Not
I have rarely been as disappointed by a movie as I was with this. The trailers were well done and it looked like a very interesting story, but when I watched it, I was bored with it and the plot failed to impress me at all. Maybe it's me, as many seem to have liked it, but I found it very uninspiring. I could not see the point, ignorant pleb that I am. As far as I'm concerned, the emperor has no clothes.
I am a fan of Emma Stone and have very much enjoyed her performance in many films. I saw way more of her in this than I wanted. The sex was gratuitous and did not serve to advance the story in any way. Mark Ruffalo looked ridiculous in most of his scenes, I'm not a great fan of his anyway, and this effort did nothing to change my thinking. As I said in the review title, I really wanted to like this film and looked forward to the experience. It let me down badly.
The Beekeeper (2024)
A Very Disappointing Mess
This movie was so much worse than I had expected. I didn't expect much but it could not even rise to the level of low expectations that I had. Nothing about the plot was believable. Statham, who atracted me to the film, played the exact same character that he always plays. If there had been a decent plot for that role, it could have a fairly good movie. Instead, it was a never ending stream of clichés and over the top situations that continually prevent the suspension of disbelief. I feel especially embarrassed for Jeremy Irons. He must have fallen on extremely hard times to agree to play in this. He used to be a fine actor, but someone must have some dirt on him and blackmailed him to get him to agree to doing this. I'm extremely glad I didn't pay to see it, though it was a waste of an hour and 45 mins of my life.
After Life (2019)
So Filled With Intense Meaning
This program brings me to tears more than I want to admit. It can be offensively crude, shockingly so at times. But the deep feelings and messages about what really matters in life more than make up for it. Ricky Gervase is a comic genius and hit it out of the park with this one in my opinion. The various idiosyncratic characters bring so much to each of their roles and bring the show to life. Some of them are repulsive as you first encounter them but you come to see them as important souls who each have value. The writing is beautiful and the meaning touches my soul again and again. Three seasons is not enough but I can't imagine how many would be enough. Leave 'em wanting more.
From (2022)
Overly Dramatic, Corny Writing, Interesting Concept
This series has it's good points and could have been really good but the writing is a bit cliche and rather shallow. Some of the actors do pretty well, others overdo it to an annoying extent. I wanted to really like it but found it disappointing.
Granted, I'm only halfway through the first season and it could get better. I will continue to watch because it holds promise and it might get better.
While I like some other, similar programs, like Wayward Pines, I find the situations here often feel contrived and sometimes cringe-worthy. It that respect is feels a lot like Lost, which gave a similar vibe.
I'll try to update once I have completed the two seasons that are currently available.
Beuramseureul Joahaseyo (2020)
Extremely well-done and entertaining
Park Eun Bin is such a talented actor - I am amazed at her ability to make every role she is in believable and so emotionally engaging. She, more than anyone, made this and exceptional series for me.
This is series is another example. Korean dramas, like this, usually have such complicated and touching stories that pull me in nearly every time and "Do You Like Brahms?" is one that does so more than many others. In addition, there is a lot of great music thrown in as a bonus.
As others have mentioned, there is a great deal of melancholy thrown in but, in my opinion, that just makes the joy more heartfelt when it occurs. I can't praise this one enough. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
