  • "The Darkness You Choose is the Darkness that Will Devour You"

I've just watched this film and my immediate response is WTF did I just watch? I say this in the best possible way. Whatever you think this film is....it probably isn't. The best way I can describe this film is that it blends the gritty tension of Reservoir Dogs with the eerie atmosphere of The Wicker Man, and adds a unique mix of dark comedy, horror, and over-the-top camp. The result is a film that keeps viewers on their toes while offering a fresh and unpredictable cinematic experience.

Directed by Ferdinand Galang and written by Aris Ramos in their first released feature film, Ang Mga Halang centers on a group of bank robbers who are on the run after just completing a heist. Due to an injured member of the group and a flat tire, the group decides to stop at a local town where not everything is as it seems. Throughout the remainder of the movie, the group must face the horrors that awaits them. I'll end here as any more info would be spoiler territory.

Although this movie tackles some serious themes, I was surprised by the amount of comedy that is sprinkled throughout which I think adds needed levity and contributes to its unique tone, elevating my overall enjoyment of it. What you're expecting and how much you're willing to follow where the filmmakers take you will determine how much you love or hate this film. For me, I loved almost every aspect of it.

The acting ranges from good to great. Richard Quan delivers a compelling portrayal of the group's leader, grounding the film with a relatable and emotionally resonant character. Aris Ramos, in his breakout role as Dr. Thor, is a scene-stealer with his blend of eccentricity and menace and was my overall favorite character.

In terms of production, Galang's direction, along with the editing and cinematography, demonstrates a commendable level of craftsmanship given the film's budget constraints. However, the musical score leaves something to be desired; its integration sometimes undermines the tension. A more restrained use of music or even increased use of silence might have amplified the impact of the film's more suspenseful and horrifying moments.

At the end of the day, I had a ton of fun with this film and loved every minute of it. Ang Mga Halang is a awesome debut that successfully brings different elements that seemingly shouldn't work into an entertaining whole. It's a film that rewards those willing to embrace its craziness and surprises. With its inventive approach and memorable performances, I am eager to see what Ferdinand Galang and Aris Ramos will bring to the screen next.
