The love story of the Joseon King Lee San & the palace court lady and later Ui bin Deok Im is one of the most well known and portrayed story out of the history of Joseon Dynasty TV dramas, whilst The Red Sleeve managed to successfully retold the story from a rather modern and feminine perspective, providing a lively and vibrant interpretation of the famous storyline.
The title Red Sleeve depicts the red sleeve cuff on palace court lady's uniform, it also embeds the meaning of all court ladies' belonging to the one and only king.
In early episodes of the drama the writer tries to depict the Crown Prince Lee San simply as a man in love, rather than a person in supreme power & status. Deok Im is also not an average court maiden but a witty girl who has independent thinking in mind. The secret tensions in between prince Lee San, Deok Im and the court advisor Deok Ro is also quite funny and unique.
The enormous attention to details, set and costumes, fantastic camera work and the portrayal & emotional expression of character development through lines are what makes this drama an epic, although with minor plot holes in the midst of the episodes. Even though the drama is based on a historical setting, viewers can relate to the thought and values it brings such as love and self respect.

The casting was perfect in terms of the crew of actors and the characters they fit into and altogether creates the vibrant scenery.
The main characters were well curated, Se Pung successfully depicted the image of a heartwarming doctor with a painful past , Eun Woo the smart detective and acupuncture newbie & Ji Han the witty doctor and secret medicine expert.
The loveline between Se Pung & Eun Woo was lovely however it feels that more could have happened for the length of 12 episodes.
However, the expansion of the detective like storyline is does not fit well with the characters although it fosters character development to some extent.
The detective problem solving have occupied most of the story and there is not much about how Se Pung act as a psychiatrist to heal the souls of patients as well to achieve self healing from traumatic experience, especially when the writer comes from a professional medicine & acupuncture background.

The drama is groundbreaking in many aspects such as the epic camerawork, film set and costume, however it neither portrays a bloody or heartfelt story. Character development in this drama is unclear and sometimes off the grid otherwise it would have been a great success.
