I was really looking forward to a grand movie production about this classic. But I was quite disappointed with how drastically different the storyline is from the originals - including the backgrounds and relationships for various characters.
Also - while this story uses a Chinese historical period as a backdrop - I don't think there is much attempts to give the sense of realism to the audience - costumes, architecture - and the obviously exaggerated size and volumes of everything. They also cast a couple non-Chinese as lead characters I think? These actors' sounded like they tried so hard to pronounce each word accurately that it sounded forced and unnatural. It's like the entire purpose of this movie is to find a reason so showcase CGI technology. But who blames them - I heard that this movies does very well in the box office - so - whatever secret ingredients they use - it works.
I'm giving it 4 stars (vs 1) - because there are entertaining moments and if I didn't know the original story, history, or Chinese - I think I may like this movie a bit more.

Love this unique and original movie. One would have never imagined how the movie can combine ballroom dancing, Japanese Samurai culture, and murders into the same plot but when it happens - it's refreshing to see because you really don't know what to expect. The leading ladies - Kate (Crystal J. Huang) and Amelia (Dancing with the Stars pro Karina Smirnoff) are sensational in acting and beautiful in dancing. Love the cello music as well! Now - I'm still trying to figure out the meaning of ending - if anyone figures it out - please comment. I'll likely to watch a 2nd time to piece it together :)
