Went into the film for Luhrmann's direction, however this doesn't follow Moulin Rouge or Elvis's engaging camera work. Instead we have green screen shots of Long Island Beach with pink saturated sunsets that stick out sorely. The grandeur of Gatsby is perfectly conveyed with the party scenes, and the mystery elements are executed well. The film drags a bit too long and Tobey Maguire spends 80% of the movie just staring at what is happening. He is the ingenue but seems wasted as an actor and the shots of him looking lost stop adding anything to the story.
The soundtrack is fun! Naturally this is not meant to be a period piece or a faithful adaptation, has its whimsical moments.

Haven't seen a worse portrayal of women in a film in recent memory. All the progress that had supposedly been made in society/industry is non existent based on this film. The female characters are indistinguishable from each other (writing wise) and only exist to serve the male gaze. Even besides the blatant lie in the marketing of a "family film franchise", the jokes are obscene, graphic and most of the time severely sexist.
The script overall falls thin, clearly copying elements of some Squid Games/Knives Out without any thought. The plot twist of the two murderers is a solid marketing scheme, but does nothing to cover the poor writing, acting and overall boring direction.
