I'm not talking about the food. I'm talking about how highly produced (is that the word?) this show is. Flashing lights. Loud dramatic music. Weird spinning and flashing tunnels the judges walk though. None of this adds anything of value to the show and just gives me a headache. It feels so 1990s game show.
I love the theme of a different country each week with a specific dish being assigned. It truly showcases the creativity, skill and knowledge of each chef and also sets a good baseline for judging.
The judges, for the most part, know way less about food than the contestants. They tend to judge on their personal preferences. They don't really offer any useful tips on technique or anything like that.
I'm a fan of cooking competition shows. This one isn't bad, but it could have been so much better. I far prefer the less flashy/noisy Great American Recipe on PBS.

I loved this series when I watched it in my early 30s. I recently saw it pop up on Netflix so decided to give it a second look in my 50s.
In some ways I love it more, and in others, I can barely make myself watch it. It's interesting how our stage of life and the passing of time can change our perspective.
Brenda is a character that literally makes me nauseous. I'm having a bit of trouble watching the second time around due to Brenda.
Kudos to actress Rachel Griffiths for her incredible portrayal of a character that was simultaneously edgy and feminist but also dishonest, manipulative, creepy and just pretty much gross and narcissistic.
I do believe the show has aged very well (have you gone back and watched Friends again? Just kill me now) and I intend to watch all five seasons again.
