This film does some things very well. The character animation is great, particularly the cat, and the visual aesthetic in general is fresh.
However, the sound design could use work, and the story turns it on its head towards the later part of the film.
If they had simply stuck to the "unlikely friends overcoming natural disaster together" theme, and not introduced other weird elements, it would have been more satisfying in the end.
Either way, it was an enjoyable film. The main character cat was very expressive, displaying social cues and body language that a real cat would, with an added bit of anthropomorphism to help connect with the viewer. Always nice to see a new animation studio put out anything worth watching.

Given the scope of the book, and Netflix uneven track record of adapting other media to its platform, I was unsure going into this show.
Fortunately, they did a good job overall. They captured the sense of exploration and wonder of a pre-development settlement, and managed to convey the sense of change over time among the family and the town. They were able to capture some of the magical realism of the book, where characters blend of magic, science, and spirituality, but I do think they avoided some of the more fantastical elements for various reasons.
The acting and cinematography are well done, and the sets are beautiful. I loved the inclusion of the narrator speaking GGM's beautiful prose to drive the story along.
I am looking forward to the next season!
