  • a simple, artistic film that follows an emotional journey of two people

"What is art? Art is a creative expression that uses imagination and skill to evoke a response, often through beauty or emotion." Using Iceland as a canvas Coz Green has painted a series of images, made into a film, about the journey of a relationship.. including the good, the bad, and the sometimes unsavoury.

The cinematography, using the scenery of Iceland, is stunning. The opening shot of waves lapping against a beach of dark grey sand and stones is visually outstanding. It sets the tone for the visuals throughout the film, which is easily the biggest positive for what is a genuinely decent film..

The story itself, written by @sidroyden, is a simple enough tale about two people crossing paths and the life of their relationship. Though it is simply told it is written very well. It feels real and is another film in a recent influx of movies that invite you into a real world and make you feel like you really know the characters.

The performances of the two main characters of Anna and Theo, played by Elin Hall and Jack Mcevoy, are a pleasure to watch. They create an emotional vortex that draws you into their relationship while enabling you to remain a passive observer. There is one scene in particular that really made me mad, but that was down to the quality of the performance by Jack. The rest of the cast added to the realism of the story and the sense of familiarity within the film.

Overall? This is a simple, artistic film that follows an emotional journey of two people in one of the most scenic places in the world. Is it a film I'll be adding to my regular circle of movies? That's probably unlikely, but it is definitely on my rewatch list for the right moment in time. For me it's getting a 3.5/5, and a solid recommendation to check it out when you can.

  • An Outstanding Slice of Musical Perfection

What if Mean Girls was set at Hogwarts? That sounds incredibly reductive, but it's honestly one of the most accurate descriptions i could think of for a big chunk of this film. Please don't read that as a negative, because I walked out of this movie with my mind completely blown, and thinking about messaging John Chu to demand part 2 immediately...

Visually this is an incredible piece of cinema. The sets, the effects, the cgi....all of it is beautiful to look at. There are certain moments that may become iconic images when people look back at this, and part 2, in the future. The sound is obviously a huge part of this, and rightly it should be recognised for the quality. The fact that Ariana and Cynthia sang all their songs live on set adds so many layers to the brilliance of the sound.

As for the performances overall the whole cast does an outstanding job, but the absolute megastars of this are Ariana Grande, as Glinda, and Cynthia Erivo, as Elphaba. Their chemistry on screen flows effortlessly, and even in scenes of antagonism they exude an aura of having the utmost fun. They permanently feel lile they are enjoying themselves far more than anyone at work should be allowed. I legitimately think they should be in top award consideration.

John Chu, Mr Director, I hereby demand that you release part 2 at the soonest opportunity. I need to see the completion of your masterpiece with the utmost alacrity. A superb job, Sir. Bravo. I will have to see part 2 in Dolby as well. It made such an impact with the sound and the colours.

Overall? I am 100% going back to see this again, and I cannot recommend highly enough that everybody needs to try and check this out. As usual my score is outside the averages, but I guess that's why we have averages. 5/5 for making me feel so goddamn incredible as I left the screen.

  • A fun film, if you can remember how to just have fun in the cinema!!

I know critics and some people are going to really hate this. I need to make this clear.... I DON'T CARE. I went in for a fun Christmas film. I came out fully entertained and thoroughly satisfied at what I had watched.

The base story, about saving Christmas, is a standard trope for this kind of movie. The difference here is how it was done, and it was done with a lot of colorful flare, some decent action scenes and the obvious finale of Christmas being saved. That's not a spoiler. It's a given for this kind of movie. The HOW of Christmas being saved I shall leave you to discover for yourself.

One of the things I know people will talk about is Dwayne Johnson, as Callum Drift. Yes, in all honesty, he was very much in character as himself but with a Christmas twist. The major point here though is that he wasn't the main character. He was a side character, the muscle if you will. For that he was just perfect and I really enjoyed his performance.

The main character was Jack O'Malley, played by Chris Evans. Jack is an NL4....a level 4 Naughty Lister, and Evans' reaction to being called that is priceless. Watching him as this kind of character is quite refreshing as it doesn't happen very often. His performance is a lot of fun to watch and his comedic timing is on point, creating most of the laughs through the film. His chemistry with Johnson seems to flow really naturally and they bounce off each other well, as antagonists at first, but will they be friends by the end?

Director Jack Kasdan was always going to have issues with the way this film was perceived, and that's not fair on him. He's done a great job here creating a Christmas movie with a new variation on the saving Christmas message. For the most part the effects are really good, though some of the cgi is a little off, and his choices as a director work really well.

Overall? It's a really fun Christmas film that I think is going to make into my annual.crimbo rotation. Just need shouts to J K Simmons as Santa and Kristofer Hivju as Krampus, as well as Kiernan Shipka as the very 'cool' villain, both awesome. It's getting a 4/5 from me. Go see it and make up your own mind.
