When they did everything wrong.
Well, there's always a problem with video game adaptions. Only a few can compete to their origin.
This one: no exception. They did try to fake the trailer as a Guardians of the Galaxy sort-of-movie. But we're no longer in the late 90s and early 2000s. The generic audience isn't interested in movies and (potential) franchises they never heard of. No matter which AAA actors they use. On the other hand there are the fans of the videogames who know and love the games and see at first glance that the movie is nothing about their beloved game and won't watch the flick.
But wait! There is more! This movie is also technically a disaster! A director who has no idea of what he's doing, awful music, an awful editing with so many cuts nobody knows what they want to show - which destroys just the remaining try of showing a story. And the actors? In general they're all good. But you can see that they don't know what they're doing.
Honestly: After Doom, Tomb Raider (Jolie), Alone in the Dark, Warcraft, Assassin's Creed and all those other movies I really have to ask: when will Hollywood learn and stop trying to build up franchises on video games?
Videogames became (interactive) movies a long time ago. And nowadays with all that nice graphics even on consoles you don't need that kind of movies anymore - as if they were ever needed.

In a world of prequels and frenchise universes this movie has been one I didn't wait for or did expect.
Especially after the 2006 Omen remake.
The story is not full of surprises. We always heard of Damian's birth, his real mother, the jackal. Now asome creative people wrote the story and brought it to life.
What to say? It's what you expect in the year 2024. But wait. It's more. Or better said: less!
It's a modern flick but in the style of the 70s. No jump scares. Just a good horror stories told in a decent way. The first death scene was something I haven't seen in a long time. An unexpected kind of killing and dying. But even more impressive. Not the usual "He's dead Jim" bloody jump scare death. More a "what the heck!? Really?" scene which keeps you mouth wide open.
And the movie continues this style of story telling and unexpected kills and how the people die. All in time without rush.
All in all this movie is doing things right other modern franchises are missing. A good story, people with patience and creativity who gave us something familiar from the past in times we only rush threw life.

Black Adam once has been a villain before he became a (anti)hero. Everyone should know this by now while this topic has been discussed in the weeks before release.
This movie compressed this long evolved story in a nice and solid, but different, way.
Dwayen (Stille The Rock) Johnson plays this character very well in his known, own kind of (kinda) acting. It's been a long journey from "The Mummy Returns" and "Scorpion King" to "Black Adam" and he did very well. He is Black Adam as Ryan Reynolds is Dead Pool.
The real problem about this movie is that Warner tries again to copy Marvel. What has been fatal with the first Justice League Movie comes now in a more decent way: The four members of the Justice Society of America are reminding of a tag teamed version of Deadpool's Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead. That older members team up with newbies is nothing new. We have seen this before in comics and cartoons. But it still has a strange aftertaste because of the Marvel way they used. Most obvious is that Atom Smasher absolutely has been a bad copy of Deadpool. No matter if it's about the animated eyes or the jokes. Which has been really bad. On the other hand there is Cyclone. A cool character, but every single action scene ended in a bullet time CGI explosion. Two times are okay. But it happened so often it became annoying. Besides tlof this the two actors did very Welle and the characters has been introduced very well. But then there has been scenes you absolutely knew: That's Marvel. No matter if it's the start of Hawkmans Jet reminding on Professor X's X-Jet while Bothe start from a secret underground platform behind a big mansion or the Iron Man styled nano armour. All this paired with cheeky jokes and sometimes oversized and useless action sequences are literally screaming "we can be Marvel, too".
And that's the worst about this movie: instead of being unique and being a DC movie it's something in between. The few existing movie studios, especially Warner and Paramount, should focus on being unique in their fight against Disney. And shouldn't copy just the franchise marketing which Disney nearly made perfect without noticing they're copying theirselfs over and over again until people won't be interested in movies which are just a copy of a former movie only with other characters.
Some said Black Adam is a game changer. But in which way? That DC movies just become another franchise bomber? If so this will become bad for DC and Warner. A lot of comic fans are already annoyed by Marvel. Always the same stories, as mentioned before, and if you don't watch the series on Disney+ you have no idea why characters on the silver screen act as they do - just as Scarlett Witch in Doctor Strange.
But there is still hope.
Besides all these problems the movie is really solid. It's luckily different in storytelling about origin stories. No matter if it's Black Adam himself or Doctor Fate, Cyclone or Atom Smasher. Big difference to Marvel. And that's actually good. Not every character needs a TV Show or own movie.
And yes, that can be a real game changer.
