Different how, you wonder?
Well in my opinion it is mostly because of the unwillingness to use the term zombies at all in the movie.
The origin of the outbrake is in short explained in the beginning as a man made blood infection, containing what they simply refer to as "rage".
Well bare with me, it is not as cheezy as it sounds. Remember, this was more than 20 years ago and made with a very small budget.
What you get in this movie, is far from combat-veteran-heroes that can defeat whatever threats they come upon.
You also don't get super-mutated-monsters that seem to have endless dexterity, speed and bodily functions that spawn new kind of weapons as needed.
No in this movie you get the essence of what it feels like being confused, scared and mentally exhausted from losing everyone and everything .. but still having an urge to live on and search for meaning.
The strong actors in this movie is the reason for a solid 7 star rating.
Just try to look pass any illogical bits about how the infections spreads different, in order for he story to have a rapid development rather than a pure scientifical logic behind it.
Watch this as part of the Must-See-Movies in this type of genre. But don't watch it if you expect 2025 special effects, CGI or Chaning Tatum. =)

The title of this series should be "How to completely ruin the franchise of SEGAs epic games".
At first it looked as it could be watchable, but when they neither made it appealable to a younger audience, by having too much unrelatable references, and neither appealing to a more mature audience .. as the script itself was even less thought through than an episode of Jackass.
I would even go to the extreme and say that compared to this, even Jim Careys role in the Sonic movie, was almost watchable.
The only reason for this not getting a 1 star rating, is the fact that they managed to at least make the fx of Knuckles appearance quite descent.
But for the love of the Sonic world ... do NOT watch this unless very drunk or otherwise in a weakened state of perception, or you will risk to forever not be able to play the game without cringing.

This might come to a shock to many fans of Chris Pine, but in my opinion he really lacks the acting skills to really portray a mentally unstable and troubled military.
Maybe it's his natural charm or his ability to almost smile with is eyes all the time.
The problem is that he isn't much of a method actor when it comes to struggling individuals of a more realistic nature.
In Star Trek or any of his rom-com movies, he gets away with his charm much easier.
In this movie it hinders the plot to feel ... real and emotional.
Ben Foster on the other hand, can play this kind of characters any day of the week. His troubled looks, deep almost endless void eyes, will make any psychologist start doubting their own judgement to spot a real PTSD victim and this extraordinary actors skills.
The ending also made absolutely no sense to me at all. As if someone wanted to shorten the movie and just cut out the last 10 min and replaced it with some more action to make use of all unspent fake munition. =D.
