I had low expectations for this and was skeptical that this is a wise choice to be the introduction to the new DCU but it's James Gunn. Maybe it will work out I hate to say it but the first two episodes tripped and stumbled under the low bar I had for it.
The characters are cliche, flat, paper thin and uninteresting which is also how I would sum up the story. The pacing is off, the music is really bad, the humor constantly misses the mark for me and it bums me out to say most of the performances are not good. Viola Davis sounds bored, David Harbour tried to give a child-like innocence to his Frankenstein but it doesn't work. I just don't get why the audience should care about any of these characters. There's nothing of any substance to grab onto. Multiple times I found myself starting to doze off and this was in the daytime and the episodes are under 30 minutes.
The animation is good but you'll find better action elsewhere.
I adore the first and third Guardians of the Galaxy movies with Vol. 2 being a miss for me and so far I haven't enjoyed any of James Gunn's DC projects and Creature Commandos is unfortunately following that trend. It feels like Mr. Gunn is always chasing that Guardians of the Galaxy, band of lovable misfits energy with each team project and it just loses more and more of that magic each time. Maybe Superman will be a departure from that usual pursuit but if Creature Commandos is anything to go on, I'm going to temper my expectations.
I'll give the show another try as more episodes come out but I'm not looking forward to it.

Let me start by saying that I liked this episode. It's good, even great. It gives us some more backstory on a character whose growth and evolution has been a pleasure to watch and for me, is a standout for the season. With that being said, as good as this episode is, it still can't reach heights of the previous seasons. My main critique is that it all plays out the way you think it will. Everything about it feels cookie cutter and unfortunately a bit tropey. In the first two seasons, this show felt like the story was unfolding naturally and not always taking the expected path. It felt organic and just alive. It had this live-wire edge and feeling to it. Every episode this season has felt as though it lost that certain spark. This episode is definitely more substantial than "filler" and delivers on the principle of "show don't tell" but the way it unfolds is unfortunately formulaic and unsurprising despite some fantastic acting.
