It took me forever to actually watch this because I expected it to be too goofy. I ended up absolutely loving it. It is quite hilarious with lots of cheesy gore but the message it was trying to get across really held its own and Hal (our main character) was relatable enough for me to care and frustrating enough for both my partner and I to yell at the screen. For a film where all the characters are caricatures, I really ended up relating to every single one. Also Oz has an AMAZING eye for shot composition so even when I was laughing, I was taken back by how well composed each frame was. To be honest it's an 8/10 but it deserves so much more love than it's been getting.
I found this for rent at my local library and I can say I'm pleasant surprised! Definitely expected a garbage alien movie with laughable effects but instead I got an actual think piece.
The premise of an alien cult that ascends into space after... no being alive anymore isn't the most creative but the angle they took is great. It's such a unique version of that idea and I really enjoyed it! I don't want to ruin it with spoilers but I finished watching this film over 20 minutes ago and I'm still pondering a few things.
The music choice is great, not over done with lots of beautiful piano scores and House of the Rising Sun is a fantastic song overall and I think fits the weird hippie/spooky feel of the movie fantastically. The cover during the end credits is beautiful and felt like a good conclusion to such a mind-bending movie.
Definitely has some room for improvement... Most of the acting leaves a lot to be desired, the two main characters and the "cabin tweaker" are the worst offenders. At some points it adds to the uncanny valley feel but sometimes it feels like you're at a really bad local theater troupe performance.
Instead of shooting at dusk or night using lights they throw on a horrible blue/grey filter. Using the handheld camera during scenes where it could have been more powerful with steady, drawn-out shot feels like a bad choice most of the time. I know that was probably a budget/time constraint but in my opinion it looks really bad.
There's a few plot lines that don't get resolved and the ending felt a little rushed but overall, I think it's worth a watch. With all the flaws, the monster and mystery still make it worth your time.

I found 'children under the house' from the YouTube algorithm and it KILLS it. Sometimes the glitch effect is a bit much, it's definitely a reader and you have to pay attention, but the plot line is SO good. I also really enjoyed 'the tangi virus'. The sound design is occasionally over the top but in a deliciously scary way. Even with headphones on it freaked out my very asleep husband~ The earnestness of the casting, the setting, and the presentation is FANTASTIC, really adds to the plots. Overall I give the series a 8/10 but I'm a really tough critic. Better than the mandala catalog by far. I actually care about the characters. Analog horror is really hard to make believable, my other criticism is that the reason why you're watching could be set up more originally. But I had to watch something happy after so... Yes it scared me in the best ways~ Looking forward to seeing what's up coming.
