"Star Trek: Section 31," released on January 24, 2025, has garnered predominantly negative reviews from critics and fans alike. The film, which transitioned from an anticipated series to a standalone movie due to various production delays, centers on Michelle Yeoh's character, Philippa Georgiou, from "Star Trek: Discovery."

    Critical Reception

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a dismal 19% approval rating based on 26 reviews, indicating overwhelming dissatisfaction among critics.

    Narrative and Characterization

Critics have expressed disappointment with the film's narrative structure and character development. Polygon's review highlights that the movie is "packed with a TV series' worth of ideas," leading to a dense plot where character arcs feel incomplete. The reviewer notes that while the film attempts to explore intriguing concepts, its limited runtime hampers effective storytelling.

Den of Geek criticizes the film for lacking the core ethos of the "Star Trek" franchise. The review states, "Section 31 becomes so boring and ugly that it no longer can be seen as bad Star Trek. Heck, it can't even be called bad sci-fi or bad genre work." This sentiment underscores the film's failure to capture the essence that has endeared "Star Trek" to its audience over the decades.

    Visuals and Direction

The film's visual presentation and directorial choices have also come under scrutiny. TrekCore's review describes "Section 31" as a "joyless, derivative, hot mess of a film," emphasizing that it fails to be engaging as an action movie, science fiction, or a heist film. The critique points to a lack of coherence and originality in the film's execution.

    Fan Reactions

The fan community has echoed these criticisms, with discussions highlighting the film's shortcomings. A Reddit thread summarizes the sentiment: "Section 31 will infuriate Star Trek fans and bore everyone else. It is rote and derivative and doesn't even look good." This reflects a broader disappointment among the franchise's dedicated followers.

    Conclusion

In summary, "Star Trek: Section 31" has been met with widespread disapproval. Critics and fans alike have found fault in its narrative execution, character development, and overall alignment with the "Star Trek" ethos. While the film aimed to explore new facets of the universe, it appears to have fallen short of expectations, leaving many questioning its place within the esteemed franchise.

  • Truly Awful

Without a doubt complete trash. This is not Star Trek. It isn't canon. This is fanfiction written poorly with zero regard for the source material. The main character can do no wrong despite being a mutineer criminal who attacked her captain of seven years. The Klingons were so poorly conceived that their design was reverted to traditional Star Trek standards for the subsequent smash success of SNW. SNW was created because audiences preferred Captain Pike and his crew over the despicable terrible no good very bad STD nonsense. The writers should be shamed at every step and barred from working on further Star Trek media.
