  • A new all-time animated spectacle

    Oh. My. God.

NE ZHA 2 has to be one of the greatest animated sequels of all time. Hell, maybe one of the greatest sequels of all time, PERIOD.

Like many others, I went into the Chinese blockbuster sequels with the information that it's currently number five on the all time box office list, grossing exactly, as of 18.2.25, $2,084,181,921. This wasn't the only thing enticing me to the film. It's animation and posters looked unreal. So I buckled down and watched the first film which was decent. But by god does this blow that film out of the water.

I haven't felt a scale of a film be so big since the final battle of the third Lord of the Rings. The final hour should be studied. I didn't feel that emotional about the characters in the original but I found myself crying by some of the happenings in here.

Ne Zha is built on and written perfectly in this film. His development here was astonishingly good. While other characters were written a whole lot better in the script, Sheng Gongbao, a one-note character in the first, is expanded masterfully in here. He's given reasoning for his actions in the original and we actually sympathise for him in this.

The first hour of the film didn't exactly seem worthy of it's box office success. While it wasn't bad by end stretch, it was only great. Fun, fantastic world building and just a really good time. But then something happens and the tone shifts completely halfway through the film and holy shit does it go hard. I was worried I wouldn't be able to pay attention as I was seeing a subtitled version, but that was the complete opposite case. I actually think I might not have liked it as much if it were in English because the voice actors in here completely nailed their performances. Way better than the English dub in the original.

I know people may be turned off by the "anti-USA" commentary this film promotes but it completely works. It makes sense and it reminded me of film's like Across the Spider-Verse. They also talk about suppressive governments and not being allowed to choose your own fate. Whether people choose to hate on this part of the film I honestly commend it for being able to incorporate it into film targeted to children. I also commend adults taking their children to see it because kids should be aware of it, or have an idea of it if something is to happen in the future.

Listen, the animation in this is stunning. While it's style at time can be a bit simple, when it's comes to the fight scenes I was in awe. The final hour is something that will be used to study because the amount going on and the amount of detail is astonishing.

I know I may use it a lot, but Ne Zha 2 is a real masterpiece. The animation, the story, the humour, the world building, these are all exquisitely done. The script and directing from Yu Yang is infinitely better the first. It's completely deserving of the title of the highest grossing animated film of all time. Expect it to be in the top three of all time by the time it finishes it's run. Already a 2026 Oscar contender from my view.

  • A film that faces its own horrific past in such an emotional way

As someone who read the book this film is based on recently (finished it 40 minutes before my showing recently) and is a huge fan of everything but that ending, which I will talk about, this adaptation of Claire Keegan's 2021 critically acclaimed novel is probably one of the most faithful and well done adaptation I've seen in a hot minute.

For starters, obviously, Cillian Murphy is astounding in the role of Bill Furlong. The way he uses his face more than his voice to act is so admirable and he does it really well. Genuinely, Oscar stuff man. Emily Watson is absolutely chilling as Mother Superior. There are I've cubes in Antarctica that are warmer than her, sweet god.

I think the script was really well done and written with a lot of care and respect towards the people who were affected by the mother-and-baby homes in Ireland and the Laundry Houses, as well as the source material it's based on.

I don't know whether the story will be as imapctful for people who aren't from Ireland. Prove me wrong please, but it talks about an issue that was really big in the past but no one had the courage to stand up until now, in the 21st Century. And people who don't originate from Ireland might not understand how severely it has affected us, especially in this day and age where lots of the children who suffered from the mother-and-baby homes are now adults and are now ruined because of it and it's heartbreaking to have that in mind while watching this.

The cinematography is stunning, to put it bluntly. Each shot I would have on my wall in seconds. I will be fanboying over for the next while.

My only issue with the film was the ending which is the same in book. I just find it unrealistic of how people would be acted back in that time and it took a bit away from the really strong statement they were generating throughout the film.

Please support your local cinema and Irish cinema and go see this if you have any interest. It's a really important film for me as an Irish and I will not be shutting up about it anytime, similar to all other new November cinema releases. #prayformyfriends.

  • A religious horror movie that'll make you think twice..

HERETIC is the newest A24 horror cat-and-mouse thriller starring Hugh Grant, Chloe East and Sophie Thatcher.

The film is one of such a complex demeanour. When people say that it's a religious film, they really mean it. The film really did its homework. A lot of interesting ideas and statements were thrown around and that made the film really enjoyable for me. I'm a really big fan of debates and the main characters do go back and forth on their beliefs.

The performances from the class were excellent. Sophie Thatcher gives a very grounded and realistic performance while Chloe East definitely is a star in the making. But the standout of the film is obviously Hugh Grant as the malicious Mr. Reed.

One issue I had with the film, some dialogue where characters would go on about a religious stance I found at points to lose my attention but it's not an issue the film can fix as I understand these speeches are quite important to the overall understanding of the film but for me personally they lost me more than once.

Heretic is one I would love to revisit but for anyone else, know, it's not for the faint of heart. Not because of gore, but because of its sensitive topics and ideas it decides to talk about and dissect. If you are highly religious, I don't think this movie would be for you but it's a really fun, mind-twister of a film that will leave you speechless one way or another....
