I was expecting just a straight exploitation movie. And while there are moments that feel that way this picture is so much more. The performances are all top notch here with an especially great performance by Glenn Corbett. This movie has a good story about a girl trying to make it in the country music industry. It's sad to think that Nashville is as bad as this movie portrays but the director did spend an extensive time there researching for this movie. There is also a lot of great country music in this movie if you are a fan of the genre. There are some really unpleasant moments and themes but if your down for the ride a great story with great performances. Highly recommend it.
So let me say I do like this movie. The action scenes are very well shot. It certainly has a very epic feel to however, it doesn't hold ip very well due to being very over bloated and needing a lot more editing. This was a huge passion project for John Wayne and kudos to him for pursuing it and making it happen but he would have benefited greatly if perhaps he had someone else there to say no that's not a good idea or this is a good idea. John ford showed up to help him and he turned him down. Wayne's inexperience as a director is on full display. Highlights for me are Richard Widmark as Jim Bowie. And Laurence Harvey as Travis. Duke turns in a fine performance but nothing extraordinary. Everyone did the best they could but as I said needed more editing and also the dialogue was very cheesy and sappy in places it didn't need to be. If your a John Wayne fan you will find it entertaining if not you may want to skip it.
