  • Last Of The Cinematic Seagals

Exit Wounds was Steven Seagal's last Warner Brothers film and his last shot at the big time. Surrounded by a large strong supporting cast including DMX, Anthony Anderson, Bill Duke, Eva Mendes, Michael Jai White, Tom Arnold and Bruce McGill the film provides large scale action and some laughs. After saving the Vice President against orders, Seagal is demoted and sent to a tough precinct where he uncovers a ring of dirty drug dealing cops. Seagal is back in shape here and clearly trying, although it is obvious there is a lack of faith in his star power by Warners as he is sidelined some of the film to give extended scenes to the ensemble cast. The music is as you would expect with a cast full of rappers and this actually aids rather than detracts from the film. Action scenes are all well done and Exit Wounds clearly had a decent budget. On the flip side the storyline is not really that involved or interesting and everyone seems to act like a jerk towards Seagal's character for no reason! Ultimately though Exit Wounds is a good solid action film which entertains in the way it was intended, and is a good note for Seagal to end his Warner Brothers career on.

  • Light Hearted Heist Caper

The Love Punch boasts a great cast of Pierce Brosnan, Emma Thompson, Timothy Spall and Celia Imrie. The plot consists of divorcee's Brosnan and Thompson going after the man who has cost his company everything, and looking to get there money back through a diamond heist. The film looks absolutely fantastic and really captures France well. Music is good, and we have a passable comedic car chase. Thompson steals the show, she is simply fantastic be it in dramatic or comedic scenes. Brosnan is his usual reliable charming self, and he has great chemistry with Thompson. Spall and Imrie do what they can with there characters but they are slightly underwritten in comparable with the main two. I found the first two thirds of the film better than the latter third. Brosnan and Thompson slowly rediscovering each other whilst planing the heist is really good, and Thompson's interaction in the Hen party is a standout scene. The actual heist scene itself feels silly, and lacks tension and this does ruin a lot of good work done in the setup. I also felt everything was wrapped too neatly up and seemed too easy. These gripes aside i did have a lot of fun watching The Love Punch and it is by no means terrible. Ultimately The Love Punch is a Sunday afternoon feel good film that moves along briskly at 90 minutes long and is certainly a fun film all be it a flawed one too.

  • A Change Of Pace For Seagal

The Patriot was the first film made when Steven Seagal's Warner Brothers Career ended. It finds Seagal playing a town doctor who has to save the town and find a cure when a local militant group release a deadly virus. The Patriot went straight to video and it is easy to see why. It looks low budget compared to his previous films and the story has very little action and although 90 minutes long the film drags. Seagal is the only big name in the film but the supporting cast all give ok performances. The Patriot has some good cinematography and i can respect that it is trying to do something different but it fails to be exciting. Ultimately this is a curio in the filmography of Steven Seagal as i think he quickly realized audiences wanted to see him break bones and take out bad guys , and he quickly went back to those type of films. Ultimately The Patriot is by no means unwatchable it is just a failed experiment that has to be given some credit for changing the formula and trying something different.
