The Iron Fist TV series is based a Comic book series. In the comic book series the Iron Fist character was called "Danny Rand" and he was a non-Asian person. So for a non-Asian person to play the character in a TV series based on a comic book, should not be a surprise.
I am mixed race. I have Chinese ancestors. I studied Kung Fu, Karate, Judo and boxing. I never wear my shoes on the Dojo mat. I bow going in and out of the Dojo. Danny should never wear shoes on the mat, but he does. He talks of tradition and respect, yet he doesn't bow every time he leaves the dojo. Thus mixed messages. The director should know better and hold up the Chikara Dojo as a place to respect. And the Danny Rand character should be showing more respect to the Dojo.
In Japan you would never see a Karate sensei using a Kendo Shinai in a Karate Dojo. Iaido is another Japanese Martial that use wooden shinai for practice and also practice with real Samurai swords. But if you are refering to Bushido, you would incorporate Archery. As traditionally Samurai, were also expert with the bow and arrow fighting on horseback. This TV series just pulled a bunch of Martial Arts together, with little desire to be true to the actual Martial Arts being practiced. Again, a lack of knowledge of true Martial Arts.
Asides from this, it is an interesting TV show with reasonable fight scenes. It is a fantasy, not reality and should be enjoyed as a western mind trying to interpret Eastern Philosophies. They need better Martial Arts advisors.
