  • It's Not Worth Your Time

Happy Gilmore 2 is one of the more pointless sequels I've seen this decade. Though I was already going in with low expectations, I didn't expect to lose my attention at the very beginning of the film. After winning the championship, Happy Gilmore goes on to start a family with Virginia, and further his golf career. But after a tragic accident where Happy accidentally kills Virginia with a golf ball, he spirals into depression, and ends up losing everything.

And while he's contempt with his new life, after he discovers his daughter wants to sign up for an expensive dance school, he decides to return to his former career in order to win the prize money that will save his daughter's dreams.

Okay first problem, "Happy Gilmore kills Virginia". I'm expecting at least half of the country to rage quit this film after the first ten minutes. This opening scene is so bad it basically kills the movie before it even gets started. It doesn't make any sense that a character with excellent ball control like Happy Gilmore would be able to not only hit, but also kill his wife. So why include this weak ass plot point to begin with? Because it's an excuse for the writers to create artificial tension.

Instead of creating a logical reason for Adam Sandler to lose everything, like say he accidentally gambled all of his money after getting too used to his winning streak, the writers decided to use the "Wife Who Dies at the Beginning of the Movie" cliche, in order to avoid putting actual effort into writing the story.

But even if you take that out of the equation, the majority of the movie is pretty boring. While there were few jokes I found funny, like Happy having secret alcohol flasks all over the house. It relies heavily on callbacks to the original film. To a point where it gets pretty pandering.

This isn't like Shrek 2 that puts the characters into difficult situations in order to elevate the comedy and drama. This feels more like Space Jam 2 where the story just repeats a ton of stuff from the original film and has the main protagonist go up against some generic villain team. It's boring, it's soulless, but worst of all, it's not consistently funny. I'd definitely give it a skip.

  • DC's Last Shot

Like most people going into this film, I was unsure of whether or not this would hit all the right notes. A Superman film that was not only following a string of failed Superman movies, but also following a truckload of underwhelming DC films. A task that even the most accomplished filmmakers would admit would be extremely difficult to pull off. Honor needed to be restored to Superman's name. And if Warner Brothers went in with their usual greedy mindset, this film would be doomed to fail.

And I'll admit, even though I'm still sketipcal of Warner Brothers, a part of me still wants to see a dynamic DC cinematic universe. I love the Superman animated series, I love the Batman animated series, and seeing them work together in the excellent "World's Finest" special was breathtaking.

When likable characters work together to accomplish a common goal, it can be exhilarating. And I was a happy I got a taste of that here with the Justice Gang. I really that James Gunn chose a lot of underrated heroes to act as Superman's supporting cast. As a "Brave and the Bold" fan, I was very happy to see Guy Gardner make his cinematic debut. And love his creation powers.

The movie may be a little long, the opening scene may be a little weird with Superman facedown in the snow, but god damn, it's been while since I've seen a good Superman movie.

The action is dynamic, the drama delves into to an interesting new take on Superman that reminds me a lot of Goku's origin story, the acting is fun, I actually like this bratty version of Lex Luthor, and I won't reveal the ending, but it left me with a fat smile. The moment when Superman learns the more things change the more things stay the same, I think is really inspiring.

I highly recommend this film, I am aware that Zack Snyder fans may be hesitant to watch these new DC films. But I'd argue that shifting gears can lead to new opportunities.

  • Curse of the Fourth Movie

"Beverly Hills Cop 4", as if Netflix didn't already have enough pointless sequels. I'm not going to act like this is one of the worst comedies I've ever seen, but at the same time, I keep forgetting it even it exists.

What's the point of making a fourth film if you're not going to try anything ground breaking? This isn't the worst entry in the series, but it's so bland. I swear this film had the exact same scenarios as "Die Hard 4". With the minor characters constantly reminding the audience that Axel's daughter is just like him and Axel constantly being reminded that he's a cop that is too obsessed with his job.

The acting is fine, but the action is really choppy. Almost every car chase and fight scene has a million cuts, so you can never really absorb the action. I know these films have more of a comedic focus, but genre blending requires a lot of imagination. I love hearing Eddie Murphy talk, but I also want to enjoy seeing him kick ass too.

Most of the jokes land, but they're all wedged in between a lot of boring scenes. Like the evil Captain Grant expressing the classic, "We're not so different, you and I", cliche.

It's not the worst film I've seen on Netflix, but It's very forgettable. I recommend you give it a skip.
