Without too many spoilers, it's a body horror, about an aging tv star, (Moore - obviously) who gets herself into something that she thinks will get her back on the hot list...
And it kind of works, but there is a twist of course, and if you don't follow the rules, bad things happen. And they do.
This was a surprise treat for me, and reminded me of the old body horrors of Cronenberg and. Argento with a dab of Carrie in the final scenes. There's mutated "things" and scenes that might make you wince a bit!
There's a few questions to be answered by the viewer and left open? Most importantly - what is going on with The Substance and who is behind it? How many people know about it? Conspiracy theories abound in the absence of answers.
I found it paced well across a relatively long run time and was never really bored, with the tension building as Sue and Elizabeth have a few 'disagreements' which climax in the finale, where the desire for adoration and fame seems to overwhelm the horror.
I would expect to see some sort of sequel or "origins/prequel" at some point to answer some of the unanswered loose ends? Who made it? Where did it come from? How prevalent is it? Is Elon Musk a Substance clone?
Destined to become a cult classic, in a world where live on ad-heavy Netflix and now terrestrial tv, it doesn't interrupt the flow every 15 minutes with the same adverts you have seen a million times, probably during the same film.
A film that will stick with you and make you think about it again and again, a rare thing indeed at the end of 2024. And if you want to know what Demi Moore did next, this is the film for you 😀

An army truck crashes with a tank of zombie juice crashes - seen that before, ticket updates, seen that before,, boring- seen that before,
Just because you put Z or Zombie in the title does not make it interesting of good. That died with Romero and Shaun of the dead! We do not need 6 episodes of this tat. Such a waste of everyone's time to even give this rubbish a bit of time.
Go and watch Danny Boyles 28 Days films if you want a zombie film rather than this loaded full of adverts piece of junk. ITV at its worst, no original ideas and just stealing from the pioneers of the genre who should be ashamed.

It's a formulaic show where Guy visits a restauran, watches food being made then eats it saying it's "the best ever"
Does this mean all the old shows and reviews of diners are now bad and heading down in his option?
He uses the same language in every episode? It becomes unbelievable after a while and definitely uncredible as every episode goes on, the antithesis of Ramsay where it starts bad and gets better.
Basically, each show is formulaic- starting with Guy in a red convertible, watching the chef make some truck stop food and then saying it's the best, or in the top 10 of that type of food he's ever eaten!
