Bohurupi shall stand as a testament in today's time, when the entire world is engulfed with the right wing politics, where the normal is not normal anymore, where citizens seemed lost, almost as a part of a zombie movie. Bohurupi stands tall to ask the questions that scare us, eventually that scares "them". It questions a very primal belief system, are we going to fight for us?
Talking about the technicalities of the film, the film foreshadows a personal crisis of a super-cop laid with his better half with bipolar disorder and a mill accountant who finds himself in a circumstantial mishap related to the murder of a union leader which then leads him to take matter into his own hands. The camera work of the film needs a special mention, as the constant focus on the landscape of the human face, made the story stay true to its title Bohurupi, as truly "Human Beings are the real Bohurupis".
The Background Score deserves all the accolades, as it uplifts the film by quite a notch, and is quite beautifully renditioned in making us believe the madness of this world and also the love in it. Performances have a massive role to play, but it comes together only when the entire team is on the same page about telling a good story, and that effort shows, Shibu da with his stint as Bickram Pramanick made a very run of the mill person make us believe in the impossible, to wear three hats of the director and an actor and also the producer must not have been an easy task, but his notes were spot on, as he delivers quite a loving look at what the life of a normal citizen might be if their life is subjected to a series of mishaps. He portrays the vigour of what should be done once subjected to such pressure. Shibu da's eyes are absolutely magical, the way he looks at Jhimli, shall be something that makes the audience also fall in love. Abir Chatterjee looks like a million bucks, he makes Sumanta Ghoshal a very real person, a person that cannot take no for an answer, his backstory although undefined, but could be formulated and made into a spin-off film, as he surely deserves it. Ritabhari was brilliant in her portrayal, the ways she played the anxiety ridden wife, through a scene that broke all boundaries of self control, made me shed a tear. Koushani as Jhimli, was good, but I personally feel that she could have been better, there was somehow a bit of deviation from who the character is and what she played, maybe due to her urban roots, but that is just my personal opinion, but yes absolutely loved her in the song "Dakatiya Banshi".
Overall Bohurupi belongs to Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukherjee's love for cinema. The sheer love they have for the audience, and also for pushing the envelope everytime. Thank you for gifting us this story and this message. "Shorkaar tomaar maarle, tomraao maaro shaala shorkaarer" 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
