I was beyond excited when this was announced back in 2011. A little bit disappointed by the runtime, but the show itself more than makes up for it.
This was obviously one of the most anticipated episodes of the show, if not on television.
For those who don't know, Mathew Corbett was a legend alongside Sooty. Presenting the original show and it's spinoff Sooty and Co for over 20 years. So having him return for a guest spot was like having Christopher Reeve appear in a Marvel Film!
And he doesn't disappoint and neither does the episode. To quote Mathew himself:
"If dad could see the fuss being made of Sooty today, he'd be tickled pink!

As I have said previously there are 2 notable filmes of this play, I've done one and now turn my attention to the other.
This is based on a production director, Max Reindhart had done at the Hollywood Bowl, which removed the famous done and planted a forest down to the stage.
His gift for spectacle is on full display here, capturing the magical elements very well. The acting however is mixed.
The supporting cast, led by Cagney and Brown give it their all, with their play once again being a the standout. But the lovers, particularly Lysander to Hermia, range from miscast to overdone.
Mendelssohn's melodies sore in this, masterfully blended with scenes of fairy frolics. But as with the next years Romeo and Juliet, spectacle upstages story, though not as prominently here.
Overall: Fun but bombastic.

There are 2 versions of Midsummer's Night. Max Reindhart lavish spectacle of 1935, and this more character driven sitcom of 1999. I'll get to the former later.
This to me is the superior version, but not by much.
The direction of Michael Hoffman captures perfectly both the drama and comedy that Shakespeare intended. The Mechanicals Play is the highlight. But the limited dialogue often repeats unnecessarily.
The cast is fine, with great turns from Kevin Kline Stanley Tucci Rupert Everett and others. But Calista Flockhart is the weak link, often overacting to the point of hysterics
Overall 8.
