This animated short follows a young woman who has fallen into self-doubt about her photographic aspirations, but mysterious events rekindle the joy of art that first drew her to it. The animation is solid, and the story is relatable-many of us have been in that place at least once, feeling lost and in need of a small reminder. The film also leaves a touch of intentional vagueness, letting us interpret for ourselves how real the events truly were.
This animated short turned out to be much darker than I expected. It's left somewhat ambiguous whether the events we see are caused by the mysterious dark blob in the sky or by the protagonist's depression and sleep deprivation. Either way, the film carries certain echoes of blockbuster horror classics like The Shining-particularly in the scene where she writes the same words over and over. For some reason, both the visuals and the protagonist reminded me of some Scooby-Doo scenes and characters, perhaps because of the eerie atmosphere and nighttime settings.
This series offers a fresh take on Captain Nemo and the Nautilus. As expected, the visuals are excellent, and the pacing is packed with action. Being a mid-2020s production, it weaves in a range of modern societal themes common in today's film and television: colonialism, corporatism, socio-economic divides, feminism, environmentalism, whaling, inclusivity, and more. These themes are clearly present, but none is pushed so heavily as to overshadow the others.
The story moves along briskly and keeps things dynamic, with an intriguing sense of where it might head next. Some characters are highly likable, while others are deliberately irritating-a mix that seems designed to keep the cast dynamic and the interactions lively. Overall, the actors inhabit their roles well, making for an engaging watch.
