  • Superb movie

This movie ranks with the very best Westerns made. Yes, the plot is a bit slow, but that is because the plot is involved. I expect the pace will pick up in subsequent chapters. The acting is top notch and under-stated. The actors playing the evil Sykes brothers nail those roles. The depiction of the Apaches is completely realistic and fascinating. The scenery is excellent. The depiction of a captured boy living the life of an Apache reflects the stories I have read.

As a veteran myself, the scene where the girl gives keepsakes to the Army soldiers i found very touching. And as the sergeant said, they would indeed treasure those keepsakes as good luck charms

The opening massacre of the white settlement was remarkably realistic. I have spent a lifetime reading first hand accounts of the Old West and this movie captures many of those lessons.

I am very much looking forward to the next installment. Unfortunately, chap. 2 has been postponed.

  • Delightful

This is a delightful movie. Its like a Frank Capra move - about idealism and being a good citizen. It reminds me of the move, "Mr Smith Goes to Washington." It concerns a man who fights City Hall for the right reasons. Interesting that it is set in the pre-war time period, when the country was gearing up for war.

The main character, Col. Effingham keeps making war references - great sense of hum. Wonderful dialogue. An excellent supporting cast. It is surprising the movie is not shown more often. A young Joan Bennett does very well. She is the subject of a running joke regarding her attractive legs.

  • Returning Vets

One of the best shows for returning vets from the two wars. Obviously, whoever wrote these plots knew the military community well. The one scene where the Major's wife quits a job because she is tired of the trivial concerns resonates with every veteran. We all come back having death with life/death issues. Then having to deal with stupid trivial concerns.

The issues here are real. Kudos to someone for caring about what veterans and their families go through. The acting is good. The dialogue is fine. Good dialogue. The plot lines make sense. It is rare to see such focus on the view of the two wars from the perspectives of the families.
