From initial impressions of the short film, it seemed to be shaping up for 8, or even 9 territory, but as it trailed off towards the end, I found myself liking it less and less.
Let's start with the positives, Ben Wheele's animation style is already fantastic, and is probably at its best here (at least in the first half).
His surreal, motion-tweened animation I think works incredibly well with this gorey, fleshy aesthetic. The use of colour is also fantastic and everything seems so wonderfully in-place.
The sound design is very good and sells the deep-ocean setting very well with ambient noise.
I loved the first half with it's wordless surrealism (I am a massive enjoyer of surrealist films) and I love how it was directed. Branded as a "nature documentary from another dimension" it really does an incredible job at providing an otherworldly feel.
With me singing it's praises so highly, you might be wondering why I've given it a 6.
The final ~2 minutes of the film abandoned its incredible artstyle and sound direction for a goofy, children's show-esque cartoony artstyle, in such a way you'd think it had lost all of it's budget in 4 seconds flat. This very much sours my opinion of the film, and I am very upset it didn't keep at its previously established mastery and incredible... ness.
Overall, would I say it's worth watching? Yes, but expect a harsh drop in quality around the 4 minute mark.
