Robert Rodriguez scores big with Sin City. And good thing, too, after Once Upon a Time in Mexico. The film was a treat. Part campy, part old-time noir, part comic book, visually stunning & ALL GOOD. The acting seems a little stiff in parts, but I think that's by design, as all of the characters try not to show too much emotion, though we get the feeling (especially in Mickey Rourke's case) that they are FULL of emotion. The make-up could have been a little better on Rourke, but everything else in the film is pretty much flawless. It's definitely destined to be a classic that people will want to watch many times over. And Carla Gugino shows us her "WOW, I DIDN'T KNOW SHE HAS THOSE" rack. 'Nuff Said.
I had the opportunity to see this film at the Phoenix Film Festival, and then again at a local theater where it had a one week run. It is a very low budget film that captures a lot of emotion. Although the "look" of the film is a bit lacking, it makes up for it in acting, and emotion. Matt Lagman's screenplay is an unusual combination of low-brow humor, sarcastic one-liners and touching revelations. A sort of coming of age story for the twenty-something crowd. Lagman found a few gems during his casting, most notably Flavia Fynn and Tracy Pacheco in the female leads. It isn't a GREAT movie. It does have some flaws. But it is a GOOD movie. PS - if you get a chance to see it, make sure to stick around for the outtakes AFTER the credits.
After seeing JWIS&T at the Phoenix Film Festival, I wasn't quite sure whether or not I liked the movie. It was soooooooooooo OVER-THE_TOP and STRANGE! But my stomach musles were sore from laughing so much. I guess it accomplished its goal. It made me laugh. A LOT! Jane White is SO FAR over the top that it makes Ace Ventura and Scary Movie look like Ghandhi in comparison. JWIS&T is full of memorable characters from Kim Little's Jane White herself to Chris Hardwick's trailer trash shirt sporting neighbor to Colin Mochrie's not-so-gay male-fetish guru. If the movie itself isn't funny enough, the outtakes during the credits are the funniest I've EVER seen. Will Jane White ever win an oscar? Not a Chance! But neither will Austin Power 1 - 2 or 3! This one hellava FUNNY MOVIE!
