I wish I had done some research on the upbringings of Donald Trump prior to watching the film, as the movie is a biographical film based on true events and self admittedly make up certain events for dramatic effect. So I've decided to ignore the accuracy and instead focus on the narrative it presents to us. The movie follows Trump and his rise in the world of New York real estate, learning from his mentor figure Roy Cohn. Utilizing Cohn's three rules: attack, deny everything, always claim victory, Trump manages to escape civil lawsuits, obtain massive tax breaks, and secure his dream project of Trump Tower. The mentor-mentee relationship dynamic hits home to me since I've been in both positions. Just like Trump, I found someone who was so incredible and impressive, almost like an untouchable and unstoppable man, and of course despite their flaws I wanted to be just like them. And just like Cohn, my last encounter with my mentee left me with somber feelings, as the cold and problematic person before me was not the same sweet kid I decided to take under my wing. Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong displayed phenomenal acting that felt so human. The film decides to mimic the 16mm cameras the news press used, giving us an uncanny cinematography style of old technology and modern camera angles and movements. The music seems reminiscent of the retro and electronic sounds from "Scarface." It is a great film and it is no wonder the Trump team didn't want this film release during the presidential election.
