"Dead Boy Detectives" is a very fun addition to Netflix's Sandman Universe. It's fast-paced, whimsical, spooky, creative, a little campy, and generally a very good time. It blends comedy with some good scares as well as deeper moments of character development (Episode 7 is a highlight in this area). The writing can be a bit on-the-nose at times (especially in the pilot), but over the course of the first season, the show really starts to find its groove. The lead trio-George Rexstrew as Edwin Paine (Payne?), Jayden Revri as Charles Rowland, and Kassius Nelson as Crystal Palace-have a very entertaining dynamic and play off of each other perfectly. Yuyu Kitamura as Niko, Briana Cuoco as Jenny, Jenn Lyon as Esther, and Joshua Colley as Monty were also very good. It might not be for everyone, and admittedly could've benefited from more episodes, but it's hard to criticize when I enjoyed watching it so much.
As a book fan, this is a fun, if overstuffed, YA fantasy series. The cast is excellent; I love Jessie Mei Li as Alina, Archie Renaux as Mal, Freddy Carter as Kaz, Amita Suman as Inej, Kit Young as Jesper, Daisy Head as Genya, and Jack Wolfe as Wylan. I am sad to see it canceled. I would love for it to be saved or picked up by another network or streaming service! It's not without its flaws, of course, but it's worth another season at the very least! For the most part it's an accurate adaptation, and I know that the vast majority of fans of the books love it a lot. Justice for this show man! 👍👍
Sweet, moving, gentle, honest, beautifully shot. Aitch alberto is a clearly talented filmmaker and reese gonzales is perfect in his role as dante. Eugenio derbez is also great in this. It's clear that the people involved genuinely care about the book and making an accurate adaptation. If it had slowed down and allowed more time for background and character development, this would have probably been a 10/10. It just felt rushed. We needed to spend more time with the characters to understand their nuance. Nevertheless, as a huge fan of the book, i enjoyed this a lot. I have notes but i will probably rewatch.
