  • Fantastic witty dark comedy w. a stellar cast

Amazing. What a great ride! Fun, fast-paced, dynamic, quirky, dark, fun - and with an absolutely stellar ensemble cast. Uzo shines (as always!), Joseph and Himesh's chemistry is off the charts, the writing is witty, and the cinematography is gorgeous; I am so glad this popped up on my feed and I gave it a go, because it was a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

I wish more movies and shows today were this original and engaging. I could've watched this as a ten-part or even three-season show, as I couldn't get enough of the cast and loved the town setting. Super highly recommended. Ten stars!

  • Disappointing, lacking heart and fun

Everything that made the first one of these great is missing here. Instead of the warm, beautifully growing relationship between JJ and Sophie, we have two grumpy people who don't like each other and spend most of the 2 hours being mean to one another. Instead of the warmth with Blueberry and Ozzie, we have dark stuff around animals. The nice dynamic JJ developed with his partner is gone, and she's just mean instead of funny.

On top of it, we have misogyny at every corner (wtf were those tampon 'jokes' and the way men control, spy on, and expect things from women for being 'nice guys'? Gross) and some racism thrown in (wtf was that comment about Sophie's natural hair?). Whoever wrote this needs to step out of the 1980s and realise we've moved well TF on from this kind of 'humour'.

  • In one word? Masterful

What a ride. From beginning to end, this is an experience of visual beauty: the cinematography is exquisite, with each frame carefully thought out and masterfully put together. It is a joyful feast for the eyes.

The film itself starts off slow, and the first 53min could have been done in 25 without any true loss. But making it through that is well worth it: the moment we arrive at Saltburn, the ride really begins. It's suspenseful and lightly creepy and sexy and twisted, in the way great southern gothic and vintage vampire movies are. The cast is stellar, and it will be a highway robbery if this film doesn't attract multiple Oscar nominations - and wins.

Under the moonlight, one of the best and bloodiest sex scenes of recent years occurs, against a backdrop of what can only be described as Parasite for white people. The English aristocracy is shown as the villain it truly is: embarrassingly wealthy, vapid white people gorging off intergenerational riches they have no right to have, spent frivolously instead of on the therapy that is truly needed.

My favourite film of this year.
