A true testament to the 90s and my childhood, Mr Bean is a dribble of various quality sketches with some interesting and charming ideas mixed in with some obnoxious and sometimes cruel envisions.
Rowan Atkinson is a marvellous and charismatic actor, who breathes life and joy to his character, almost if it was a child you want to forgive for their mischiefs. However it's the writing for his character which ultimately lets him down as it creates a woefully inconsistent and even conflicting persona from episode to episode.
The location work, costume designs, props and ideas propel the show, with the best episode being 'Mind the Baby' which portrays Bean in a manner which is altruistic and beautiful.
But too often it's him being quite nasty and even cruel to others around him with no consideration, and that is a harbinger to the terrible decisions that would plague his movie reboot.

An astounding looking film for the most part, "Dune" is difficult material that director David Lynch intelligently looks at, decides what to emphasise and what to throw out, and calculates a brilliant script that shows the strengths of the original story.
Kyle MacLachlan is a top tier actor and takes this role with a passionate sincerity. Francesca Annis is a great actress but her story arc was largely cut. Jürgen Prochnow is a wonderful and caring leader of his people. Kenneth McMillan is genuinely mad and is given fantastic makeup and visual CGI for the time. The remaining cast, including Patrick Stewart, suffer from the extraordinary amount of characters and therefore are difficult to credit since they don't get a lot to do.
There was overwhelming condemnation of this movie upon its release, and I've never been able to understand why. It moves with real briskness from amazing interior sets to perfectly lit exterior environments. Many sequences are shot better than Villeneuve's later efforts and the dialogue is to the point and powerful. The main criticism that is largely shared is a somewhat mediocre final act that isn't clever in its final logic nor does it carry the same effort and energy, but the whole movie never gives a dull moment.

Although admittedly not my type of movie, "The Shawshank Redemption" has an allure that takes a hold of you and locks you within itself for the ride. This is particularly due to a fully fleshed out and high in content story that has a lot of characters that all get meaningful stories.
Tim Robbins deserves a main casting for a movie, he is perfect for this innocent yet determined character. Morgan Freeman has a wisdom that grounds the movie, yet doesn't quite enough of an arc of his own. Bob Gunton is a truly phenomenal and is the greatest prison themed villain of all time. Clancy Brown is imposing, but again lacks somewhat of an arc and almost becomes a caricature.
The direction of the cinematography and scene composition is excellent, and the movie has a 'get to the point' focus in each scene which allows the runtime to contain huge amounts of powerful, clever and thoughtful emotion. I do have to be in the mood for this kind of film as it can be depressing and it is not a go to for excitement, but overall I understand its appeal.
