  • VILE

Watching this movie was a horrible experience.

I went in expecting more of what this series normally does so well: telling a compelling story about A Good Man standing up against overwhelming odds for Good People who are Powerless to defend themselves from the gangsters and bullies who exploit them.

What it delivers instead is an overwhelmingly vile and ugly betrayal of what the Zatoichi movies normally stand for. It starts out dark and rapidly descends into scenes that are too depraved to even describe here. It's a parade of ugliness that leaves you feeling sick inside. The "arty" storytelling only makes things worse. I metaphorically walked out well before the end. I couldn't take it anymore. It's that bad.

What was Shintaro Katsu THINKING? I can't imagine that this went down well with series fans at the time. It certainly killed any interest I had in following this series to its conclusion. STAY AWAY!

  • Mitchum and the Production Design make this worth watching

You'd think after three tries Hollywood could get FAREWELL MY LOVELY done right -- but nope, this is another whiff, watchable only because Mitchum is the best screen Marlowe and the production design is genuinely outstanding.

The question needs to be asked, Why can't Hollywood screenwriters just FOLLOW THE DAMN BOOK?

Do they think they're smarter than Raymond Chandler? They're not.

I understand the need for compression and the combining of characters, but don't then waste all the space you've gained by adding in a lot of extraneous characters and JUNK that isn't in the book! In this case, much of it seems to thrown in just to ramp up the level of completely unnecessary sex and violence.

At least Velma shoots Moose in this one. MURDER MY SWEET couldn't even get THAT much right. For the rest, this is a bog, stinking FAIL.
