This could well be the worst Austen adaptation ever put to film, also one of the worst, it makes Pompei 2014 look like a stunningly accurate portrayal of roman life and politics by comparison. The constant constant 4th wall breaking constantly takes you out of the movie. There's so many modern anarchisms from the dialogue to the casting to characters who need to glug wine from the bottle. Some of the cast seem to be trying to play it straight, others are going for comedy, everyone seems confused. The way each character is introduced by a voice over is so Dumbed down as if we couldn't see for ourselves who they were. Was this aimed at kids? The comedy is atrocious a character at one point quips she can always fall lower then proceeds to trip and fall over. So much for the wit of Austen. Also ruined is the original story's sensitive tone of regret and hurt. Instead ww now get horribly modern lines like "He's a 10!"
The music isn't even that memorable, only the art design and costumes at least are very easy on the eye. This distorted ridiculous take on the Georgian Period though is utterly infantile.
An unbelievably incomprehensibly bad movie that makes some staggeringly bad choices. The look of the movie is pretty awful, the ugly costumes, the Dutch angles, the horrible tints, the cheap looking effects. It's hard to appreciate either just how idiotic the main villain is in the movie either, someone so poorly written it's almost a fright to watch. Why can't we have villains who are smart, therefore the hero has to be smart to in order to overcome them? The movie just has nothing interesting to say either, no values or anything of interest lurking underneath, nor is it stylish or fast paced or visually attractive.
I have to say I enjoyed the show very much. 6 episodes was plenty of time to cover the huge country properly. The range of food on show over the programme was impressive as was the social context of how it was eaten, from humble food for the masses to the finest restaurants in the area. You meet quite a range of people over the show and get to to see some of them again in episode 6. There's a bit of history that's covered but it's really mainly about cooking and definitely makes you feel like a prawn or chicken curry afterwards. There's no escaping the heat and madness of the country at times, the show isn't super polished but feels instead quite raw and natural capturing all the moments other programmes might edit out.
