This is a story about sisters Jane and Cassandra Austen, with an emphasis on Cassandra's life. Told in two timelines, present-day and a flashback, I much preferred the flashback storyline, where the drama between the sisters and their family, and their situation in life as women during the late 18th/early 19th century, felt meaningful, real, poignant. The letters in the present day storyline were a bit of a letdown, there was nothing particularly revelatory in them and they merely served as a vehicle for us to see those flashbacks. (I did enjoy Keely Hawes' performance as present day Cassandra, though). The antagonism between Mary and all of the other characters was interesting at first but didn't really go anywhere, I was waiting for some juicy reveal about her in a letter but nope. Truly the best part about this was the dynamic between Jane and Cassie, and Cassie's devotion to her sister. Worth a watch if you can get past the tired/contrived plot device of reading letters as a means to revisit the past.
