Servant (2019)
Well thank goodness that's over
I really wanted to like this series. It had a very creepy but interesting premise but something supernatural was occurring but after three seasons,
I still would not be able to tell you what it is, what the point of this series was and what the viewer was supposed to be left with after watching it. For me, rather hollow is how it left me with very little empathy for much of the characters.
As I never watched it drunk or stoned, I have a clear enough mind for this series to leave me thinking "HUH"
Sorry, I'm not going to waste time writing about the plot because only God knows what it is. Ok, I lied. The show is about a woman who accidentally kills her baby by leaving it in a car and her husband, brother and the doctors use a doll to give her something to bond with to try and soothe her through the shock.
Then some young girl shows up and you can't tell if she is a cultist or just a whacked out demon because super natural stuff occurs whenever anyone crosses her. She shows up to assist with the woman's recovery only making her life worse instead. There; that's all I'm going to say but at the end of three seasons, I knew I would never watch it again.
The 100 (2014)
I wanted to hate it but I couldn't
As I said, I wanted to really hate this show but I never could. The unfolding of the initial plot was well done and as the seasons progressed, even though I wasn't completely sold on all the premises I had to admit that most of the actors carried them through well.
Some characters I hated and then the same characters would grow up and change which made the show intriguing. Now some of the science was pretty far out in places and the season 6 and 7 plots were pretty thin in believability but again, the actors and actresses made me want to believe that THEY believed.
And then all in all, the one aspect of this show I had great respect for was the dedication that each of the friends had to one another and how they would murder and oftentimes almost die for one another. The ending of course, well I loved it.
Farscape (1999)
I'm not sure I get it.
I have to admit, I did like the premise of the show. The only thing is, it just seems really shallow. In fact, the main character is nothing more than a shallow pretty boy a-hole as indicative by the way he treats his father. It was repugnant.
Then he whisks off to who knows where and ends up in a warped episode of the Muppet Show. I mean, I'm already ticked off at the lead character so the show takes me to the far side of the universe to introduce me to even bigger a-holes!
Sorry but this show does not stand up to the remake of Battlestar Galactica or even Babylon Five for that matter. It just bores me.
Schitt$ Creek (2015)
Sometimes surprising, sometimes not
This really is a difficult show to review because there are some things to hate about it and some to love. I'm not sure David's love affairs should be as front and center because they are rather boring and his character is the most difficult to like. At times it's just way over the top. Alexis is my favorite as I have known girls like her that are really that ditzy. I think Johnny Rose, the father played by Eugene Levy is by far the most realistic and Catherine O'Hara's portrayal of Moira is by far the most ridiculous. I'm not crazy about Chris Elliot, the mayor of Schitt's Creek, but he's tolerable.
Where this show shines is the majority of it is concentrated on the vapid cluelessness of the participants in the life they have been thrust into, namely riches to rags but then when you least expect it one of them does something wonderful for each other. This was never more apparent then in Alexis graduation ceremony episode which I found absolutely enchanting.
My feeling is that this show is at it's best when it doesn't try too hard. I do enjoy watching some of the unlikability of these people fade away and something of real humanity finally shines through/ It's really the only reason I watch.
Corner Gas (2004)
Corner Gas I would say is for everyone.
I really hate saying this about comedies but "this is a great little show". It actually reminds me a lot of Seinfeld in that it's really not about anything other than the people in it. The writing is above average as it relies heavily on snappy comebacks without sounding cliched. The situations are quite funny, some of the characters are a bit unrealistic (is there anyone dumber than Hank?)
That being said, it's just plain great entertainment. Highly watchable from the first to the last minute. It would be nearly impossible not to find at least one character in Corner Gas that doesn't remind you of someone you've known.
It's what I call relaxing comedy. It's not side-splitting but you do find yourself guffawing every once in a while mostly due to the consistency of the characters and the situations they either are placed in and most times they place themselves in.
I can honestly say that I watched every single episode prior to this review and if you're looking for light-hearted and with characters that are neither annoying or banal then it's required viewing.
The Reader (2008)
Great story but...
I found it fascinating. But I have problems with the morality play here. I understand that the Holocaust was horrible but the woman in this movie portrayed by Kate Winslet is someone caught up in the horror of German dominance. Michael Berg on the other hand, has free will in his actions and his choices are utterly contemptible and repugnant. He's actually worse then the woman he so freely judges. The movie is riveting but has such a sadness that it borders on depressing. It also begs the question for today's society, are you so very sure that you would be able to refrain from doing similar when you have a gun held to your head.
