Up till now I've only seen Marilyn Monroe in comedies so it was pretty surprising to see her in a more dramatic role but thankfully she was great. I have seen some other movies from this era of hollywood and out of that batch I think this is the best depiction of mental illness (or, at least the most respectful). Personally I don't care much for realism in films but I can appreciate it when it's done this well. This was really tame and subdued as to what it shows and lets the characters actions speak for themselves. There is no villian here, only someone in need of help. I think it probably could have had a longer runtime but it filled it up well enough. Also I just realized that this mostly takes place in one room! Didn't even cross my mind while watching this.
I've been watching a lot of hk action movies over the past week-ish and I think this is my favourite new discovery. From the opening chase sequence to the melodrama in the middle this was all great. There is a little tone shift in the middle of this movie, while it still remained campy the tension increases significantly and all of the surprises in the last bit worked great. I have seen Cynthia Rothrock and Yuen Biao is many supporting roles and they were always okay but here they really excelled. Also on this rewatch, I saw the wide release english dub rather than the original Canton version and I think it still holds up. Definitely not as good as the og but If you don't like reading subtitles I think this is still worth watching for free on the internet archive!
Review originally written on letterboxd, viewed in an IMAX theatre.
Rewatched this with friends (who like most other big marvel movies) and they absolutely hated it. I'm still rather indifferent but on rewatch I found the attempts at emotional moments to be laughable and honestly hard to sit through. This was also my first viewing in IMAX (thought I was missing out on the visuals) but man is this movie is just bland. The whole Mad Max esc world that Deadpool & Wolverine are sent too is super stale to look at, and I felt like it needed something more interesting (outside of stupid cameos) considering a great deal of the movie takes place there. I'm glad people seem to be loving this movie but I can't say that I really cared for this, I think it might be my time to check out of the MCU.
