This is somewhat of an underrated heist movie which was directed by the Hughes Brothers, the same men who made Menace II Society in 1993. Dead Presidents follows the sad life of a man named Anthony Curtis, who after spending time serving his country in the Vietnam War, turns to a life of crime to support himself and his family.
The movie is yet another depiction of the sad reality some people in the black community have faced. Black people in the 1960s faced lots of struggles financially and also had to deal with racism. I watched this movie a couple of years back and loved it.
Dead Presidents is not your average heist film, it highlights poverty and the racial tensions in 1960s America. The cast is great! Even Michael Imperioli is in this movie. Larenz Tate stands out the most, he is a very diverse actor, I say that because of his role as a ruthless gangster in Menace and then playing the role of a soldier in the Vietnam War.
Dead Presidents would later be parodied by the Wayans Brothers in 1996 in the comedy film Don't Be a Menace along with a few other classic hood movies.

Like the other classic hood movies of the 90's, Poetic Justice is about the main character trying to escape the negative, violent environment that they live in. Janet Jackson will play the role of Justice, a woman who witnessed the murder of her boyfriend. She suffers from depression and the only thing to help her cope with her loss is writing poetry.
This movie is yet another example of how our young black men are so quick to pick up a gun in order to express themselves. There is so much hatred within the young black community. I'm starting to sound like John Witherspoon, because he would say the same thing to Ice Cube in the movie Friday.
Tupac plays Lucky, a mailman driver. He meets Justice and her friend Iesha (played by Regina King) and they all decide to go on a road trip and get away from South Central. During the trip, Justice struggles to get along with Lucky and everyone gets into arguments, but the more time they spend with each other, the more they fall in love.
Poetic Justice is an emotional movie about love and trust. It is still a very important movie that you must watch if you've seen John Singleton's other films like Boyz n the Hood.

Boyz n the Hood is very deep on its message regarding gentrification, racism and fatherhood. It was a very emotional movie that lots of young people around my age (23) have glorified due to its violence, which is just sad. Another movie that highlights the importance of fatherhood? South Central.
Released about a year after Boyz n the Hood, South Central focuses on the life of a man named Bobby Johnson (Glenn Plummer), who is part of a gang called Deuce. He got out of jail and goes to see his newborn child. During a party, a rival gang leader harasses him and his own members, so after the party celebrating his release from prison, Bobby murders him.
Later, Bobby's "friends" took him for a ride in a nice convertible and they all get caught by some undercover cops and he eventually goes back into prison for the killing.
During Bobby's 10-year sentence, his son grows up fatherless and gets caught up with the same gang members who manipulate him into stealing car parts to make easy cash. This leads to his son getting shot in the back and it becomes a real eye-opener for Bobby.
Bobby's cellmate preaches to him religiously about how he is ruining his own child's life by being in prison and making the choices he made. You must understand the message of South Central and it might make you a bit emotional.
The overall message of South Central is that you must be in your child's life until they are considered grown enough to make their own decisions, you teach them how to behave and act like a grown adult. Go to school, don't drink, don't smoke, stay away from the wrong crowd so you can set a great example for your son or daughter.
The reality of this movie is that so many fathers are barely in their children's lives to see how they behave and they let them do what they want. So much of what you see in South Central still happens today, and by the end of the movie, you'll be touched by what you saw.
Watch this film, it's very important that teenagers and parents get a dose of reality from seeing it.
