The original was amazing and untouchable; however, this movie was great in its own right. I wish they wouldn't have tried to use it as a remake because it failed as such but was a great movie in its own right.
I loved this movie but I had to remove that it was trying to be a remake. The premise is so different as are the characters. In this, they're trying to reach enlightenment, not funds to support their lifestyle. There's a deep story to this one. I also enjoyed the lines bit.
You can't replace Patrick or Keanu but this movie doesn't do that even if that seemed to be The point. The characters were so different.
Should've been its own movie with zero ties to the OG.

I had heard about this movie and figured it'd be bad so waited for it to be streaming on something I already pay for as to not waste money. Since it hit Netflix, gave up an hour and 23 minutes to watch. I'm a big fan of Virginia Madsen so figured it had to be somewhat okay. Virginia was excellent at portraying the evil Christian mom stereotype, she gave me chills as I felt like I was watching my monster in law on the screen.
I have to agree with the majority here, the movie was shallow. Had a good premise and loved the brother but he was a backdrop to the Nichola show sadly. I knew she wasn't a strong actress from previous films of hers but she definitely solidified it in this. Very flat and vain. I had read someone's review that called this a "vanity project" and "cosplaying poor" both statements were 100% correct.
She should write what she knows because she's so off when trying to write about poor people in toxic environments. As someone who has lived it, we're not all druggies (being poor actually means you usually can't afford them), drug dealer boyfriends aren't traditionally sweet and loving, stripping isn't the only job we do and highly doubt she'd be the sweet angel when in that environment, and so many more flaws. It's like she read a checklist of things poor people go through and put them all in here with no plan other than checking off boxes. The blank stares were so obvious and annoying. Plus, what was up with the messed up eye makeup on her and mom? Like, even being poor, I know how to wipe off mascara dots and smudge my eyeshadow.
2 stars... 1 for Virginia and 1 for Arlo.
