I could sit and talk about how amazing everything was, but I want to focus on one thing. Oscars. OSCARS. From the cast to the set, costumes, effects, camerawork, EVERYTHING WAS INCREDIBLE. The crowning jewel of the film was 100% the performance of Ariana and Cynthia. Needless to say they both deserve Oscars. Ariana was destined to play Galinda, and she proved it in this film. She truly just embodied and embraced the role. Cynthia. CYNTHIA. Cynthia is talent. She completely was Elphaba. She gave a performance that showed all the sides of her character. She embraced her smartness, her charm, her whits, and especially her slight craze and sense for justice. If either of them aren't nominated for an Academy Award, I will riot. This movie has changed me for the better.
As someone who grew up with the Descendants Trilogy I remember watching the first one air on TV for the first time in my grandparents living room. I was in love with everything about the movie. The story, the characters, and of course the songs. So when I heard a fourth film would be coming out, it made sense to me that I would be watching it, having fun, and loving the songs. However, I think I'd rather have my head cut off than watch this again. I will say, when I saw Brandy and Paulo come onto the screen, I began to shed a tear, for I also grew up watching the Cinderella movie. Their voices were both so powerful in that movie. When I heard Brandy start singing, the autotune made me cry. Full on ball. The autotune within everyone in the film was utterly rancid. Definitely the worst of the 4.
From the music to the dancing and even the beautiful costumes and sets, "West Side Story (2021)" is one of the best musical adaptations ever made. Ansel Elgort's outstanding performance as "Tony" and Rachel Zegler's perfect portrayal of "Maria", I'd like to think that Sondheim would be proud of everyone involved with the film, but especially Spielberg. But someone very in particular that shined like no other in this movie was "Anita" and "Anita", Rita Moreno and Ariana DeBose. Moreno who'd played "Anita" in "West Side Story" in 1961, had me sobbing as she sang "Somewhere". Yet DeBose had a presence like no other. Her graceful yet fearless dancing and singing in "America" to her gut-wrenching portrayal of "A Boy Like That/I Have a Love", she truly did deserve her Academy Award.
