I watched this movie for one reason only and that was to see Tom Ellis. He is a profoundly talented actor and I will watch him in anything. I do not have NETFLIX so I waited until I could find this for free online. The movie itself was rather contrived and mostly silly, I figured out the ending about 20 minutes in. As usual Mr. Ellis is the class of the acting, pretty much head and shoulders above the rest, even with a rather ridiculous character. Damon Wayans Jr. Is also quite good and I wish he had had a larger part. If you are a Tom Ellis fan by all means watch, you get a bit of eye candy, along with his talent.
This is one of the more remarkable pieces of drama I have seen in a long time. The format of real time (1 hour is 1 hour), can sometimes be boring but not here. You really feel like you are there in that emergency room with all of the staff. You get to know the people little by little, I have watched every episode and it just gets better. It is tackling timely and controversial problems with a real world sense. I would recommend watching but non bingeing, the emotional overload would be too much. As the staff goes from patient to patient in a big city trauma center, there are moments of levity, of profound sadness and all to biting reality.
I watched two episodes. I couldn't decide if this was supposed to be a comedy, a drama, or scary. It failed at all three. Too many characters and precious little about any of them. You see an ex-something or other who is a wannabe singer take off her falsies and a few scenes later she is repairing a pool table. His mom is the epitome of a good southern woman who is hospitable to even Satan's representative. The villain is a bumbling two bit carpetbagger reminiscent of Boss Hogg. Bacon himself seems to find it all rather silly as he lurches from scene to scene. I have always thought him an excellent actor but even he can't do much with such silly material. The half hour format does not allow for any kind of story development, have an existential crisis, kill a demon, see you next time. The premise is an old one, Ghost Rider is flashier, and Brimstone was far, far better writing and plot line.
