This film had the potential to be a complete home run and whilst I thought Robert Pattinson was excellent, the more turns it took, the more diluted it became. It was clear from the introduction of Mark Ruffalo's character that a Trump parallel was being drawn, even Hitler was subtly referenced several times which was entertaining, but ultimately didn't lend well to a cohesive theme. It felt like a very political impromptu storyline where one second the Multiple Mickeys would be the key plot line before it turned to drugs, colonialism and dictatorship. It felt like none of the storylines received any full attention which left a lot to be desired. Overall not the worst film and it was great to Pattinson in a comedic role which he nailed. 6/10.
Let go of your expectations!
This film does not and should not live up to the first and why would it be as good as the first masterpiece?
Instead this film trades the depth and character development of the first for amazing cinematography, creativity and flare. The film is face-paced and makes you feel like you are in the heart of Rome with some amazing camera work and cgi.
The plot is not amazing, but passable, and appears to be more of an excuse to deliver the epic battles and draw parallels between Maximus and Lucius. The epic scenes didn't quite capture the same magic as with the first with Russell's acting as well as the score being second to none. Mescal played his role well and despite the criticism of his lack of emotion and inspiration I think that reflected more on the character he played - after all he was not a general like his father and never claimed to be so his subdued and withdrawn nature seemed to make sense.
Overall, if you are after a great cinematic experience with plenty of action and a different take on the original gladiator experience then you will love it.
If you are expecting the same captivating and emotional experience as the first and won't be satisfied unless it draws close to it then perhaps this one isn't for you.

I am quite surprised at the overall positive reactions for this film compared to the first one as I don't think they are comparable at all.
Unlike the first film, Inside Out 2 felt rushed and lacked the time to properly develop each character. The film lacked direction at times and felt quite disconnected. The first film had an amazing sense of journey and adventure and I think that's where this one missed the mark. The journey undertaken by the original characters simply didn't have the same sense of purpose the storyline felt forced to try and rush to the end where where we all learn lesson of the complexity of emotions are what life is about.
All in all not a bad film, the animation was still great, same with the voice acting, it just lacked the extra magic of the first and didn't quite evoke the same feelings.
6/10.
