The premise was intriguing, but it was all wasted thanks to a lame and lazy screenplay. The actors did a great job, but no matter how good the performances are, they can't compensate for a bad screenplay and mediocre direction. It feels like the director watched a bunch of romcom mellodramas and churned it in a blender to make this. After a few good episodes at the start, the rest of the plot was directionless.
I don't mind the sound effects used for the comic purposes, but when the context for which they are used is really unfunny, it becomes annoying.
Even though cliched, I loved the dynamic of the lead pair at the beginning.
This drama is a romcom from the "borderline narcissistic" pov.

The series started of with one of the best pilot episodes of the last decade. The hand to hand combat and the animation were just breath taking. In the begining, the show promised a classic john wick style revenge story but with a cool ninja twist. But things took turn to being rather boring and bland as the cool ninjas were replaced by cgi mech soldiers. I love mech. Soldiers , but not more than ninjas. The writing of the show turned out to be pretty juvenile in the later half of the show. The abrupt cuts in the scenes ruined it further. This is definitely NOT the worst show of the season, but for a show that started of as promising as this , to fell off as it did is pretty sad. It became just another mediocre show.
Also fleshing out the dead character while the main character remains totally unexplored is just bad writing.
One of the saving grace for me was Kenjiro tsuda, who voiced Higan. I am a big fan of him and his voice.

The Strongest Magician in the Demon Lord's Army was a Human
This episode wasn't some earth shattering pilot episode, but it successfully does what it is supposed to do, i.e to set up a long overarching narrative and a short & immediate narrative simultaneously. I haven't read the manga, so i can't judge the overall story, but from what has been showed in the pilot episode, the plot seems fairly interesting. The animation is basic but decent, and since the animation studio is quite a small one, it wouldn't be fair to compare it to the animation that bigger studios put out.
The opening song is amazing.
Biggest con - lack of original character design, especially the MC. The character design of the MC is a complete ripoff of Yuno from Black Clover.
Nonetheless i am looking forward to watch upcomming episodes before judging it further.
