Well I've already decided five months in advance that Predator: Badlands won't even come anywhere close to Killer of Killers in terms of quality, story or entertainment. This was such a surprise. The three stories merged together so smoothly. I'll go through each story individually.
Ersa had a gripping and action packed story driven by revenge. Her determination to kill the Predator is by far the best of the three. Anders' death defined the spark of rage needed to lead Ersa to kill the Predator. Her method of execution was so brutal and satisfying.
The Japanese character, who I believe was named Kenji. This was my personal favourite of the three stories as I found the setting, story and action to be the strongest here. The sibling rivalry aspect being overcome by the arrival of the Predator was well done and brought the two brothers together to fight a common evil. This is by far the goriest of the three stories which was also followed up with the coolest Predator. This one was so much more lethal than the other two and it met the goriest demise of them all. Overall an excellent story.
Torres is easily the worst and least interesting of the three stories. It was so lacking with the Predator and easily was the least dangerous of the three. I just didn't think the stakes or action was as good as Ersa and Kenji's.
The bonus of the movie was the twist that revealed the three stories converged into one final act where the three were forced into a Predator gladiator arena. This was such a cool idea and it was a shock to see. I loved how it finally explored how the Yautja culture worked and how they find out who can be the killer of killers. The final act was so well done and very entertaining. It also left off on a cliff-hanger ending which I hope spawns a sequel just as good as this was. There was a really cool cameo appearance of Naru from Prey which goes to show how connected the Dan Trachtenberg's universe.
Overall, this is a huge step forward in the Predator franchise and I already know that Predator: Badlands is going to be much worse than this. I love what Dan Trachtenberg has been able to do with the franchise as he's revived it with two incredible movies, so I hope that he can make Badlands just as good. Killer of Killers proved that the Predator fits into almost any timeline and can make compelling stories and that it can also be animated. This film was gorgeously animated. As it stands on the day this review is published, this is the highest rated Predator project. I hope it stays that way.
